Thanks @conceptmonkey @lukasz-draws and @big-misch!
So, finally got back into doing these contests!
I had a certain idea in mind when first starting. Overgrown was kind of a weird theme for me, I haven't really done a lot of plant stuff, or at all, and after doing a few studies I came to realize that I should try to tilt the theme into my advantage. So after taking some artistic liberties; I started to think outside the box, instead of there being an overgrown landscape or environment, why not a creature?
These first two images were kind of the beginning point and they were a very early stage of the process. I wanted to make some hulky plant creature, and I kind of loved the thought of a humanoid without eyes, because we've pretty much seen limbs and "mouths" in plants, but not eyes. After trying a few compositions and designs for the character, I decided to just go ahead and see how it would feel. Looking away from the awkward pose, rendering it made me realize how bland and boring the design was.
So I started another character, and this is where my concept changed slightly. At the start, I still wanted there to be a big creature rising from some ancient lake. The thought was, that plant life had begun growing on the slumbering creature. And the more I developed the design, the more abstract the theme became. And so, I underwent my final concept decision, changing the theme from being a hulk like plant monster, to a fiendish creature exposed to overgrown corruption. And I would still connect this corruption to plants, so I picked a sinister-looking flower (a rose) and tried to add some of those aspects. The spikes, intended to look like thorns, and a lot of red color.
Process aside, I'm quite happy with the end result!
