Gesture drawing (5min poses)

I used posemaniacs for these studies. I enjoyed using it for my 2 minute studies however this time for the 5 minute ones I was not a massive fan. I feel like I struggled with this batch so that is probably why I enjoyed it less.

Artist Study

Here I did a study of a piece by panelperday so that I could use it when I do Color and Light Theory 1 assignment 2.

I initially was quite loose with the linework as I was planning on going over it and cleaning it up but by the end I thought it was good enough and left it as it is.

Color and Light Theory 1 assignment 2

I really struggle to identify what Colour Harmonies are used in pieces without plugging it into Adobes color wheel. And even then I sometimes am not competely sure. This is my first time doing this and I am still very unfamiliar with it all so I can see it improving over time.

Nice work on the gesture drawings.
Kyoung Hwan Kim's artwork is pretty impressive. panelperday's medieval art is interesting.
Your color studies are very impressive. Plugging it into Adobe sounds like a good idea. Good work.

Thank you! I am glad that I enjoy working on gesture now, I am hoping all my current anatomy studies and studies to come will help me represent poses more interestingly and dynamically on the page. Time will tell. It always keeps me motivated seeing other people comment, so thank you : )

I would like to take credit for this but I just copied the idea off of Marc in the Term 4 Colour and Light 1 lecture. While I found it really helpful, I find it near impossible to guess colour harmonies in my head without using it - apart from the more obvious ones like complimentary, monochromatic and split complimentary. Guessing that will come with more practice and more time using colour as I have used it very little so far.

Term 4 - Block 2

Here are the tasks/assignments I compelted this block : )

I had a lot of fun in this one. This is the first time since restarting the course where I am reaching new content so I am watching the new lectures etc and feel like I am learning a lot which is fun.

I have felt that I have continually struggled with colour, rendering and arm anatomy throughout the course so far so this is a block which I looked forward to completing.

Anatomy 3 assignment 1 - Highlight all upper body muscles over reference photos

There was a lot of content to absord in the Term 4 Anatomy 3 - Upper lecture but I found that this was a good task to consolidate it all. I realise now I focused on forward facing torsos a lot more than the back here but I will just compensate with doing it the other way around in the future.

I still struggle a bit with the serratus and when watching the lectures the arm anatomy seemed simple enough but when it came to highlighting the muscles I realised it was more difficult than it looked. Similarly to last time - when I just did this for the torso - I think that when it comes to drawing the muscles over a skeleton assignment, it will greatly help with my understanding of what I have learnt here : )

Color and Light Theory 1 assignment 3

So for this I followed along with the Term 4 - Colour and Light 1 lecture for the grayscale forms then I added my own colour ones in.

Looking at this now the shadow for the purple "U" shaped rectangle looks a little off and maybe should be coming down the page a bit more? Hard to tell.

Color and Light Theory 1 assignment 4 - Analysing Colour Harmonies

I know that Color and Light Theory 1 assignment 4 asks us to just generally pay attention to colour in life etc and try to spot colour harmonies but I think when I am walking around I am zoned out 85% of the time, so I altered the assignment a bit to look at colour harmonies of other artsits works.

I am still relying heavily on adobe color for these assignments:

I need to try harder in the future to analyse the colour harmonies in my head first before inputting it to adobe color to check my work.

Study (copy) the stylized upper body anatomy of 5 characters from professional artists/shows/games you like

I had a lot of fun doing this assignment : )

I decided to take it further and have split my page down in 3 parts. The left being the reference and the middle being a linework copy of that reference. Then (the added part) the right being me trying to apply that style to a study of a reference in a different pose.

I am very happy I have stopped trying to copy references 1:1 and am more focused now attempting to understand what the artist is actually doing with their form and linework etc etc. Keeping the reference off of my drawing surface and on another screen forces me to spend more time looking and understanding the reference rather than just copying the shape and direction of individual lines one at a time at the same scale. I feel like I am learning a lot more this way.

Anyway, I think I did quite well here, with my favourite being the 4th sheet : )

Wow, this exercise looks really fun! I think you really nailed Jun, maybe add some more super black accents
Ognjen reminds me of bridgman, super blocky and constructive yet pleasently dynamic
Rution I think for your piece needed more angles, more triangles, less squary-ness

That shift from observational-copy to process-study is a total paradigm shift! I remember seeing someone mentioning this when I first started and I was super intent on doing the study via copy, but somewhere along the way I was like "ohhhhh!!! there's so much more here, I just needed more framework to understand how to dig into it." It really takes our studies to the next level.

Nice work on the upper body studies.
The color and light studies look pretty good.

I think with the guidelines it works. Maybe move the shadow a bit more to the right.

The color theory looks pretty good.

For the character study, it's pretty well done. I could try that next. I think the last torso study on page 4 needs some work on the abs.

Thanks! I was quite happy with my Jun attempt too, youre definitely right about the black accents, I should have sprinkled a few more about the place.

I agree, Ognjen also reminds me of bridgeman which is probably why i am attracted to their artstyle.

Good point about my attempt with Rution, I think that is my weakest attempt of the bunch when trying to apply the style to another piece. I for some reason find it much harder to construct with triangular/angular shapes and sometimes default back to squares without realising it. I will try this one again down the line : )

I appreciate the critique, it is always motivating having people help me on throughout this journey : )

Term 4 - Block 3

These are the tasks (below) that I completed this block. This one took a little longer than the other blocks as these tasks just felt like they took longer to complete and I did a few extra stuff here and there.

Study (copy) 20 hands in simple poses from photo references

This is my first time properly drawing/studying hands and I quite enjoyed it. I was enjoying it enough where I added some quick colourful shading/rendering to the hands as I was doing them even though the tasks was just to do the lineart.

If you look at the "individual sheets" I posted here you can see the reference I used for each hand and the construction I used as well : )

Critique for these is definitely appreciated. I found drawing the fingers curled In surprisingly difficult.
