A couple of critiques for you on the measured figure you've done
When you draw the grid keep it tight around the figure. That'll give you more lines to measure off of and help with finding the shape of the negative space. Measure landmarks from several different points, for example with the knee, don't just measure from the hip and foot but check the angle from the shoulders, elbows or any other landmarks, that will help to find the correct placement of the knee in the picture. One thing I'll do is to copy the layer I'm drawing on and move it over the photo and then make notes as to what needs to be corrected.
