Taken 4 of the thumbs on a bit, tried a couple of the others but they weren't going anywhere. Not sure which of these ideas I like the most or fit the theme best. Will have to ponder for a bit!

Refined the design for the 3rd one. going for some overly ornate gothic plate with some fantasy exaggeration. Still needs some work to unify the design elements, but I might work up one of the others first and see which I like best.

Another of the thumbs turned into a more complete character design. Not sure if I'll do either of the others, I think they both have potential to be interesting pieces, but possibly not in the context of this competition.

Think I'm going to go with this design, although i might come back to the other later.

Quite happy with the colour palette, although it'll probably get sifted about once I've settled on the feel of environment.

Now with back view. Changed up the cloak a bit, still not sold on it though; will think about it some more while I work up the composition.

The design on the shield is fantastic and it would be great to see it in the final piece. I think the imperial colour palette gives the champion a lot of strength which i'm guessing is what you're after The tumbnail also has a nice traditional feel to it so i'm not sure what style you're going for but something like this might be a good reference? http://s1320.photobucket.com/user/jason_rhoades1/media/DefilerofSouls_zps89f99bc0.jpg.html
Only helpful advice I think I can give is maybe eventually opening up the front of his helmet to give a better emotional connection to the champ
All in all though this is really cool, I cannot wait to see it finished!!

Here's the piece starting to take shape. Limited value range at present, I'll be working in some deeper shadows and brighter highlights next, now the forms are more or less in place.

Any feedback you guys care to offer on the piece so far would be awesome

@mikedalzell Thanks! Glad you like the design! I have been thinking on and off about opening up the helmet. Part of me wants to keep the champion aloof, but I get what you mean about needing an emotional connection to the piece. Might give it a go and see how it feels. That's a really nice piece! I will definitely be aiming for a more traditional feel; the concept board is a little more stylised with the heaver outlines as that's how I tend to design things, but I prefer to aim for more realism when painting (despite the subject matter :P)

First pass at colour. Need to leave it for a bit and come back to see if I like this direction. Might have overdone the dodge tool a bit.

Its quite different to how I'd originally imagined it, but that's not necessarily bad!

Feeling like I really need to boost up the piece, so playing around with an expanded composition to inject some extra points of interest. Not sure if this helps or I'd need to do something much more drastic to the main figure to make the piece work.

Floundering a bit! Any feedback would be most welcome : )

Gonna call this done for now. Might tweak a bit more closer to the deadline, but I'm just fruitlessly pushing e-paint backwards and forwards right now! Will update the concept sheet to reflect the finished design shortly.

Whoa! The extra stuff really boosts the piece up that extra bit, I don't think I'm even able to give any good feedback par for a congrats, looking really sweet! nice one!
