Hi, I go by AAphk but my real name is Alex. I'll be on the sci-fi side of the competition. I haven't got down to drawing yet but have planned out how I will spend my time getting ready for the competition.

Dec 15 - 22
Ideation - Plan in writing different directions I could take the character, make a mood board and do studies based on it.
Dec 23 - Jan 5
Sketching - Try out different sketching techniques to come up with ideas based on the different directions I came up with in the ideation stage.
Jan 6 - 19
Narrow Down & Research - Choose a group of sketches I like best and unify into one design, gather more reference and do studies of it.
Jan 20 - Feb 2
Flesh Out - Design the specifics of the character, (personality backstory, engineering problems), choose colours and make concept sheet.
Feb 3 - 10
Illustration Ideation - Come up with the idea behind the illustration, make thumbnails and colour comps.
Feb 11 - 16
Illustration Start - Choose a thumbnail and turn into sketch, clean up linework, choose a colour comp and use to paint basic colours.
feb 17 - 23
Illustration finish - Render Illustration until it is complete.

I'll make sure to keep this updated as I work through the plan, I'm looking forward to it.

Well first stage is complete, overall I want the charecter to have a cyberpunk feel, I came up with three directions I could take the charecter in: The first is the cyber samurai, a mix of the future and the past. Samurai armour has some really cool shape language that will mix well with scifi mechanical shape design and I want to mix in some goth ninja fashion too. The second idea is the cyborg messiah, my idea is that it is an entity which will bring peace by merging all of society into one super organism. It would do this by creating a virus that takes over nanomachines in peoples bodies and spreading it across the world through computer networks. I think this idea would be fun but pretty hard to do. The last idea is the noir hacker, a mix of noir detective and high tech computer hacker, his enemies would be corrupt corporations and Orwellian governments, he would achieve his ends through hacking computers, social engineering, infiltration and good old fashioned violence.

and here are some studies I have done of the reference, it's not pretty but I'm mostly just trying to internalize some of the big shapes which I can then replicate in my early designs and some studies trying to internalize the mechanical shape language.

Neat plan and interesting references.
Potentially you could have a character with the personality of a samurai, the skills of a hacker, and the fashion of a messiah. Mix and match Hope to see more.

I've completed the second stage now, I think my sketches for the samurai and hacker were not all that interesting so I will go with the Cyborg Messiah.

Thanks Mhnke and mr_dessin, I'm glad the creepiness worked.
Here are the thumbs are colour comps for the illustration although I think the thumbnails may be completely illegible for anyone but myself.

Creepiness with purple lights and dark clouds ( number 5) could work very nicely
But sure other settings could do too (#4 & 5 last one) ^^

The illustration took me a bit longer than I anticipated, fortunately I had planned to finish a few extra days before the closing date, I had time to revamped the concept sheet a little too.

The brief said that the champion would bring peace back to the art commmuntiy. My character the Cyborg Messiah infected all of humanities nano-machines with a virus which took over their brains and made them want to join together into one super organism. They are very peaceful now.
