SAWITRI THE SPACE SHEPHERD

My main Inspirations is from Hayao Miyazaki's girl characters in in animation films. He powering and emphasizing women in most of his work.

So for this competition my idea is to create an ordinary girl who work in a space farm as shepherd. Suddenly she tangled in some universal events that leads her to her main role in this story. She had to use her own strength and ability to fight much more superior characters against all odds to bring peace in the art community once and for all.

Next post I'm gonna show a few rough sketch of her and her sidekick.

Here is a few sketches of Sawitri based on a few traits of her that I list down. I want her to be an energetic, optimist and confident girl and at the same time a bit clumsy, impatient and quite unorganized.

After a few sketches, I believe a girl with a short hair will resembles more. My personal choice is no.1, no.5, and no. 8.

Since she is a space shepherd, I need to design her 'minions' too, which I'll show the sketches in the next post.

From character design that I choose, I start brainstorming the 'minions' or space sheeps. I want it to compliment with Sawitri; make it completing with each others. Any traits that Sawitri lacks off, her minions will balance it out. For example if Sawitri is clumsy or unorganized, one of her minions will have a strict and firm personality. By that, they have to work together in order to defeat the other characters.

I kinda fuse this 'space sheep' design with dog or wolf. I want it to be not just a mere sheeps, but also resembles a good and loyal companions.

Next I will show the outfit sketch.

For Sawitri's outfit, I inspired from traditional's malay outfit; baju kurung. From baju kurung, I derived to make it scifi-ish, adding a few things without jeopardize the traditional design.

I also add a few features to the character such as backpack to carry one of this 'minions'.

Next post is full front and back.

Very nice! I like the 6th and 8th outfits the most; also the second and second-to-last sheeps, with big black alien eyes. Good luck! :grin:

I choose the 3rd outfit from the previous sketches. From that, I start making the front and the back of the design. I had to drop a few things such as the buckles because it makes the outfit run away too far from the baju kurung that I refer to. I choose bright but not too catchy color to show her youth spirit and her country side elements (shepherd). I put a few sci-fi elements to resembels the timeline; and to show her identity as a shepherd somewhere from a farming space colony.

I also add a few other items for her. The shoes for example is an air blade. I wroks like a rollerblade but this time the 'tyre' is generate by the air pressure under the shoes. This will note make her fly however, but enought to dash, skate and climb between and on top of building surfaces.

One of the backpack features is she can carry one of her minions with it. So her story will be much more fun and with a lot jokes with her and her friends. And the adult sized shepherd staff will will compliment with the shoes and her minions. Other than her primary weapons, It also can help her climb, throwing her minions towards enemy as an attack combo, plus other stuns with her air blade.

Now towards the final piece! :smile:
