I like the 1st one, but I really like the 2nd one because it gives a lot of contrast between her clothing and bookcase! I'm wondering what it would look like with red accents instead of blue? I also feel like darkening those accents just a little bit would really make her face pop! Just a thought tho
Overall a really cool concept and designs, can't wait to see where you take it
Haha, thanks @veesketch. That is pretty much exactly what Sarah recommended to me as I stared at the end work from this afternoon, so that is exactly what you will be seeing tomorrow.
The goal is going to be to make it seem as if the clothes are made from parchment with writing on it, which will obviously be hell to render, but should make for a neat image in the end. So it'll be a bit of a rework again, but that is what this phase is for. I'll probably mess with more poses for the hell of it too because why not?
Thanks for the input, I really appreciate having more opinions, especially when they all happen to line up nicely.
More fiddling went on as the morning went on.
I realized partway through the day that I had made her layout mirror an open book with a red silk bookmark down the middle, so I kept on down that path. and I got about this far with that.
Anyone have some comments? Really always appreciate it. And there is no way to be too brutal with me, even though I might not agree with or use every idea, I do appreciate em, especially when something just looks dumb that I missed.
Thanks all!
I thought that it might be better to put up a comparison shot and ask for opinions based off that. So let me know what you think folk. Any of these worth it? Should I push anything harder?
I find it consistently hard to judge my own work without some time in between and I am trying to eliminate that.
I'm really liking the 1st and 2nd one! She definitely pops in those two.
Just a random thought I had when you mentioned bookmark - it could be fun / interesting to have her hair mimic a bookmark tassel kind of like the ones in:

Don't know if it would work, just a thought
@veesketch Fantastic idea! I was fiddling around with her hair this morning and I just couldn't come up with a change that I liked, but those little tastles with the small ball holding the whole thing together is a great idea to keep with the concepts hook! I will have to work those in next time I sit down. Thanks! I really appreciate the idea, I'm looking forward to seeing if I can make it work.
@griasnoggal I am so glad to hear you and @veesketch say that you liked the first one. I had asked some family and friends what they liked most, and it was all over the place. But 1 was my fav as well. so I moved forward with that.
Here is the bit of detail work from today, I always record my screen so I can see how much I actually did during a day, and since I changed so little and seem to be working on details now, I know that I am pretty much done with the front concept. Went through a LOT of iterations on this one. Good thing I enjoy iterating.
As always, I greatly appreciate ideas and critiques.
I really like the idea and the design! I see you are struggling with the hair a bit, that's alright! I struggle with rendering hair as well ! I find Ahmed Adori's and Sara Tepe's hair tutorials are the most helpful, so I would recommend watching those. Here are a couple of links to their videos- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SYIPBS2F0k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDi8OzB8a_A&t=655s
Hope it helps! Also, I feel like fabric and lighting needs some improvement as well. What always helps me is to ask questions like-What is the fabric made out of? Is the material heavy or light, thick or thin? Is the fabric smooth and reflective? Right now it looks like silk, but the turtle neck would have to look different then. Right now the turtle neck looks like it is supposed to be stretchy heavy fabric. Also think about the rule of "stretch and compress". when it comes to fabric folds and body movement.

Good luck! I can't wait to see the final version! Great work so far!
Hi, I really like the idea both for her and her powers/abilities.
Here some tips that may help:
You'll like to be sure the design helps to read the kind of mindset of the character. What kind of hero is she? Is a righteous hero or is more kind of an anti-hero? That sort of thing.
If she is some sort of "knowledge keeper" then her current visage and expression are more than appropriate. Strong and intense eyes. Severe expression. I Like it.
One thing about the rendering: watch out around her clothes. The shadows on them are way too dark for the light-environment she is in and the folds in the lower torso feel a bit stiff.
But I do like the highlights on it. And the overall idea is intriguing.
Hey, i like the way you carefully develop the character. I have one thought about the bookcase, why don't you try to put it as a backpack, with center of mass around chest, instead of butt ?
It'd be easier for her to walk, also the silhouette would gain a curious lollipop shape - with big mass above and thin legs as a support.
@Ana56M Thanks for the links, when I mentioned having trouble with the hair, I meant more as in an abstract concept way, just not sure what style to go with. But I am certain that I will not stick with the giant brown bananas I stuck on her head I will have to check out the videos because I don't believe I recognize those names.
Do you have any ideas for hair styles that might be fun? I want to have big hair that will mimic the concept of a book cover, @veesketch had a really fun Idea I will try out, but I would love more ideas and suggestions.
@1989mar-am Yeah, I am not sure what I am doing with her face yet, I left it neutral for now while I work out the costume layout. I am torn between a severe "knowledge keeper" as you said, or something much more light hearted and silly.... so in otherwords I have no idea
@seekula That is exactly what I was thinking when I was messing around with the idea, I wanted the shelf to be part of the silhouette, but it looked like it just wouldn't possibly work, so then I gave it little paper spider legs, and then I decided to move it out as a companion and expand on her silhouette without the case. So yep! Totally with you on that.
@innocent Oh don't worry, Im a massive comic fan, they will be in there, I just have to decide who it will be.
I could use suggestions for peoples favorite characters from literature (Comics count as literature damnit!)
I keep on thinking about having the classic Stan Lee in the spider-man costume too given the timing of all of this.
Been messing around with this more, liking this version. And I do like the idea from @veesketch, works pretty well.
Think I'll ditch the jumpsuit, but maybe I'll circle back on some version. I am just enjoying this cuter version with more casual clothes. Think I'm almost closed in on it and it'll be work time soon.
I like the new update design, she starting to look like a real badass i think one thing you could touch up is the prop itself to something a bit more explored in the sense of different shapes and sizes because that prop is whats going to sell this whole project and its just looking like a normal book case so if you have a bit more time on your hands i would take a second to explore more option and i think you have your self a solid design!
I agree, I was thinking that the scroll legs should really be coming off of scrolls, possibly nailed to the sides of it. I want to get some comic books in there, and then attach some other things to it. I actually have a bookshelf near me that has some fun features that I have to add in there.
Yep, that thing is just way to boring right now. I also have to decide if it is benevolent or not as well. Kind of like the idea of it being like a puppy, but malevolent pets are kind of fun as well... still not sure.
@Ana56M Well I tried to mess with some Egyptian skirts just because I always like to try things out, but I didn't come up with anything that I liked more than this idea. I kind of ditched the Egyptian concept over the course of the work, so its ok.
I am thinking that this will be the design I work at this point, I will mess with some more details on the back to make things make more sense. And of course I have to flesh out the book shelf still because its still boring. Wound up being a design mainly based off near modern fashion with a focus on sweeping flat lines (pages) and a bit of use of the appearance of a book (bookmark, pages and leather cover)
I rather like it, and I enjoy warping text as well. Moving on to the bookshelf and then doing the real work part.
