I'm thinking about a futuristic ambassador character who would be send to distant systems to represent the gouverment of his star system. I want to incorporate the idea of african culture into the design, assuming a space program of a private african company established the base for interstellar travelling...

NICE I love this combination, I don't even care that I choose fantasy, I'm really excited to see what you do with this

There's a character that's very similar to your character idea in the show "The Expanse", it's a sci-fi show but the character basically fits the profile to a tee (except it's a she instead of a he), might be worth checking out for reference

update:
- working on the concept, probably the most difficult part for me
- i switched to more rounded shapes
- v7 like the white parts + pattern, maybe draws too much attention towards the lower half of the char
- v8 calm color + pattern, maybe too simple
- v9 too much red, nice large pattern
-> combine pattern 7 + 9, less white, keep new head, details for vest?

@aveon: thanks for the hind, i never heard of the show, maybe should check it out some day, has a good rating and yes, that woman char has a nice style

I actually like 9 the most, it does have a lot of red but depending on the reflectivity of the jacket the red may be offset by the contrast created by the lighting on the folds and such.

thanks guys! here a update, started in zbrush since i didn't come up with mayor changes in 2d.
- i'll go for sth like 12, added a futuristic version of the tortoise symbol i found in some of my ref
- might go for a mech arm up to the ellbow, not just the hand as in the drawings
- bot right shows cloth without armor/ vest
- used a base mesh i created before for the proportions, head will be changed later
- now refining all parts and filling gaps in the design..

update:
- spend quite some time in marvelous, in the end changed the thobe look a bit, keeping the middle gap narrow but chamfering the corners to show a bit of the trousers
- worked on the arm and all other parts equalli
- also looked for a lot more ref since i wasn't sure how the cloth will look like...
