I'm planning on entering with an entry for England! Thinking about what we're known for, I'd like to combine the monarchy, some elements of folklore and maybe include a prop designed around a fancy tea set.
Here's my initial moodboard - I'm going to use Tudor-era armour and clothing. I'm really liking the over the top puffy sleeves Queen Elizabeth has in her portrait.I'm thinking my character could be undead herself and control resurrected spirits of fairies to fight for her - these could pull the souls out of enemies to be dropped into a teapot and drunk later to keep her life force.I've not had much experience drawing animals so I thought it could be an additional challenge to include a mount in the illustrative piece.
Some of my rough initial sketches
Very nice start. My favorite is number 2 in terms of character balance and shapes.
I agree with you, second one is more appealing!)
Thanks for the feedback! I might do some more variations with the skirt then
I like the longer dress (not sure what the two shapes are with flowers on the end though) If you are doing a mount though a long dress might get in the way a bit, both practically and compositionally.
Thanks for the thoughts! Yeah I was thinking the same about a dress being impractical for a mount, that's why I chose trousers for the 2 designs on the right. The shapes I think you're talking about are long bits of fabric on the sleeves which seem to be common in that period - but yeah it's hard to tell in the sketch
I've not posted an update in ages so here's where I'm up to at the moment - I've got the overall shape I want but I'm now adjusting the design as I go along with painting the character sheet. I'm also adding lots of references to roses, England's national flower.I'm going to render her base clothing and make another copy afterwards with the added cape, cuffs and either a collar or additional armour.I realise England's colours are red and white but I think it'll be fine to use the union jack's colours since I think it's more recognised worldwide than the English flag.
Great design!
I like the one with the white hair, fits the coat
