Heya guys! Quite excited to join this competition, almost missed it (only found out yesturday oops)
Okay so back to business, I decided to create a character to fight for Light. So I was thinking, Light..?

Why are they risking their life for this side?
What needs light? Plants!
And what fantasy creature I really like? Orcs!
So boom a nature orc. So I jumped in Sketchbook Pro with a basic idea and some plant references....

So above are some thumbnail sketches I did to try and figure out how I wanted their form to look like... With a cup of tea in hand, I chose 4 sketches and did a bit of backstory digging....

Backstory: Their village got attacked by the soldiers of Darkness and they were slain whilst defending the sacred tree. Upon death, the tree's roots 'absorbed' the corpse of the fallen orc and created an exo-skeleton out of its bark. Now the orc fights for Light to ensure that every plant, that every living creature gets to see Light once again

I did some face sketches for the general feel of the character's personality.

Number 5 got me thinking of maybe doing a female orc... Time to build them up!

Upon sleeping on the idea, I decided to go with a female orc, since this meant I could add more curves and fluidity to the image. For weapons, since she was reincarnated by the Sacred Tree, I decided that maybe insect pincers would be suitable. So I narrowed it down to these two bases.

What do you guys think so far?

I like how the weapons seem ingrained in her, it's really indicative of her fighting lifestyle, perfect for a champion .

The sketches are a bit messy but i do like the attitude and outfit of the first one more than the latter.

Upon choosing one of the final sketches, I refined the concept, mapping out the colours and details. Since this is a nature orc, I chose warm earthy colours and to convey her position as a Light warrior, I thought maybe a glowing heart would be pretty cool. And since its important story-wise too.
(P.S. I forgot to write it on the image, but the tooth hanging from her belt is her culture's equivalent of the "Lucky Rabbit's Foot" )

Any thoughts/tips?
