Critique for Painting WIP!

Hey Khromies! This is looking promising, but all in all, it may require more information depending on what it is trying to be! No perspective issue due to it being so close, and the pose seems alright(?). I can't quite understand what is going on so far, and that makes it a little difficult to critique at all! Seems too raw and rough at the moment for any valid point besides "just work more on it". As it stands, seems as if someone is hugging her from behind, and she is looking to the side? Perhaps you could clarify the emotions in her face, if that is the case. Anyhow, the colors seem to be really nice. They are quite harmonic and fit together nicely, being almost complimentary colors. There is almost complete balance, however, you have a bit too many colors going on with that yellow.

Hey! I wasn't sure how clean I should make it. (( Since after this stage I generally just start painting over the sketch.)) It is intended to be someone hugging her from behind and her looking distraught! (( It's characters from a show where the the one behind is dead!))

My only gripe right now is right hand coming around seems to look like it well.. lacks a wrist? Thanks so much for the reply as well!

Ah, understood. I guess this would've made more sense if I had known about this character and the story! As for the wrist, which hand do you mean? Her right or our right? If you mean ours, then yea. The hand coming from behind looks twisted, but that can just be rotated And they might seem too big, I do not know how big the character is, but those forearms look larger than her entire humerus and a little more. Also seem a little too thick maybe?

And as for facial emotions, I always say to over exaggerate and then adjust! This way, you can push it to make it obvious and dull it down if it reads differently, or is too absurd.

The character ( Rose!) is actually fairly larger of height and body type then Pearl! They are characters from steven universe. The hands do need to be adjusted, and should I space the shoulders more apart then what they are?*

OHH; you know what? I didn't even see the upper arm on this bigger character until now. Only saw her forearms sticking out, this is making a lot more sense now, my apologies. Yea, the shoulders seem a little close. Her left forearm is foreshortened, but her right is more flat to our view, so it shouldn't seem as short as the other one! Anyway, my apologies again! Her upper arm kind of just blended into the background

I personally immediately saw what was going on with the hands/hugging and her expression is quite good!
I do not know your rendering style, but I would say: use fatter lines for your lineart, to really define shapes and details. You can always paint over them.
Furthermore, I miss values and contrast, facial planes etc. Try to separate the fore- and background while improving the values. Good luck

I should try to clean up my sketches more, I always make them super messy then flats(basic shadows) then start rendering! But it's not the uh.. most readable style.

I'll update today when I've painted in some more so people can more clearly see whats going on. I was also wondering if maybe I should crop from the right more? Or just move out her shoulder, since all that's really there is a uh.. empty area of light.

While I'm working on the other painting, could you guys maybe critique this one? It's been done for awhile, but I know there was areas I could've improved on alot.

The nose dosen't make sense on that view. your nose is in front view and the face in half profile.
Also your materials are not that good defined. the part on her neck which is on your picture white is actually metal. and the blue part dosen't have a strong specular and gloss.
And your details dosen't match really with the model. So i would suggest use more reference clarify all the details materials etc. .
Also maybe just do some study on materials so you have a better idea how to apply it on different surfaces

Noses is something I struggle with alot, so i'll have to keep the angles in mind more when I start rendering.

Defining objects/armor/clothes when painting is what I'm really trying to learn right now. I tend to get overwhelmed by details when painting and sketching and it's hard for me to keep up with what I'm painting and coloring. I should probably start doing material studies before I begin work on paintings that require metalic structures and what not!

I should have also put in the first post I am fairly new to painting.

Also I worked on the original painting alittle more and.. I removed the second character because I didn't like how much the arms were covering the clothes, but now the potrait looks too plain and I have to switch around the light sources. (( Also I feel like her skin isn't pigmented enough?))

I like your rendering/painting style, nice colours and so soft
BUT I would suggest not rendering before all the lineart is correct and working. Because the fundamentals have to work. Rendering and details are next and wasted if the concept doesn't work.
I think that's the case with her face and crotch area anatomy.. It kind of scares me, I don't think muscles work that way.

(My feedback was mainly on the D.Va piece).
So on the last piece: do you know SakimiChan? Your style reminds me of hers. I would work a little more on her hair, just add more strands and glow. And I'd say the star should follow the curve of her breasts, now it seems to lay flat.
You have really nice skin rendering, keep it up

She is one of my favorite artists! And I've been trying to study how she renders faces to help when I'm painting, since my faces always seem to come out less rendered then the other parts of the body.

I'll adjust the hair and star aswell!

Hello. sorry for the late reply i just so your post . The foreshortened hand is fairly well drawn. The part that mostly needs fixing is near the triceps. As for the body the lower half should be higher if the foreshortening i have in mind is indeed what you were aiming to achieve. I did those quick fixes to show you what i mean. Hope it helps
