Couldn't sleep well last night, so ended up trying to ink the sketch.

It was certainly an interesting experience and a lot of fun to dedicate more detail to a sinle piece!

I first tried to do a lot of cross hatch, but then I inked over that and liked better the high contrast of pure black and white. I also refrained from using any type of gray scale, since it is supposed to be only ink.

So first piece for inktober! (And also the bust from memory exercice Marc's course asked for).

Also been hard at the manga. I've been working on my time/quality ratio, and I think so far it's working out fairly well. So far each page takes about 4.5-5.5 hours in average, which is pretty decent and work well with my schedule.

Several points over my last post.

It's not inktober yet. It was 3 am, my brain somehow made me think it was already october. That was weird and embarrasing.

Though the piece was great practice... after looking at it with fresh eyes I was not satisifed with it. I kept thinking.... I can do better. And so I set out to try to do so.

Same idea, same character, similar design, but tried to make it better. And I think I finally found a proper way to use screentones, in combination with ink (which I think is their main purpose). Also experimented with resolution resizing which worked great!

All in all, I feel I learned a lot from doing it! and got a better piece to start inktober when it actually starts!... though I guess this counts as an early start.

Also started watching the zbrush videos.

I've been bouncing back and forth on doing the exercices or not. On one end, I can just do them to learn something new, on the other, I don't see myself using it in my pipeline anytime soon.

Then I noticed the license cost and... yea.. I'll be skipping the exercices, but at least I'll watch the videos to know about it.

I do use CSP 3D capabilities... sometimes... barely. Honestly when I need a reference I'll just look for one, use google maps, or take a photo of the angle or piece I want and use that as the reference.

Anyway, still got a lot to do in term 3.

And also been hard at work on the manga! 3 pages to share for now. Almost done with chapter 24!

Nice work ! Using only black and white can be tricky but you did great. Are you going to do all 31 days of inktober ?

Thanks man! I think I'm finally starting to understand screentones more. Mostly because i'm forcing myself to work in Black and Whites.

Yea, if I were to start learning 3D, I'd probably chose Blender. I don't plan to incorporate 3D in my pipeline any time soon though.

I mean, I get why it's in the course, since there are many people trying to get into an industry where 3D is widely used. If that was my case, I'd probably do an investment on it. Instead my interest is on the manga side, which is why I purchased my license for CSP

I probably won't do all 31 days, probably not even most of them. I wish I had the time for it, but in between everything else it's unlikely.

I will at least do a few pieces though! It really is very useful to try out different techniques.

Yeah the 31 days is definitely a tough challenge. I'm only gonna try to do it this year because I know I will have time for it (and because I'm working in the sketches a month before instead of coming up with ideas on that same day)

Note: you can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. Inktober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better.

My goal is to get better at inking digitaly, and also to get over the "fear" of showing your drawings to the world.

I wasn't really familiar with the challenge, only that it existed. Just did a quick search and found the details you posted.

In the end, I guess anyone can take the challenge as they see fit and adjust it to what they want to achieve.

Personally I want to try it to test different digital drawing techniques, and doing just BW is a good fit for someone who is trying to do manga. To get better understanding of screentones and some practice on BW style drawings.

I realize part of the objective is to be consistent... though I'm not sure what frequency I'll aim for. Maybe only 2 or 3 pieces per week? I'll keep practicing and we'll see how it goes.

I'm also excited to see what drawings you all do though!

Something I forgot to add, people sometimes make their own Inktober list with a special theme. For example if you go in IG and search #inktoberlist or just #inktober you could find more than a few. you could probably find one that fits you...or even make your own. It has to have a cool name tho, it's the law.

If you want consistency and practicing skills I think 1 per week is good enough. I'm addicted to pain so I'll do the 31 days.

Bests of luck there I'm actually eager to see how you do it, and maybe I'll take a harder crack at it next time. For now, yea, I'll pace myself and do a few per week to get the practice in.

Not sure about the theme for now, my head is so buried on the manga development that I'll probably make that my theme for now. Or maybe do some fanart to practice other styles. Maybe both.

Just a bunch of exercices this time as we continue to watch the zbrush videos. It's interesting to watch while I do other stuff.

Some muscles identification with The Rock. Guy has some wide abdominals.

I think I starting to memorize them more!

The some gesture practice. 2 mins. Nothing extraordinary, just trying stay warm.

finally some cloth exercices to dress up some nakey characters from previous exercices.

By that last one I was feeling tired so I ended the sesssion and went to get some air. I feel it could had been better, but it's all good exercice none the less.

And one more manga page! almost done with chapter 24. Good practice for mouths and more expressions

Wew, back to work. Gota keep grinding.

Thanks a lot! At times I'll get a streak of free time and I'll try to work on this as much as possible, and then there are days like today were I barely get to do an exercice or two.
I really enjoy doing all this, so I'm always looking forward to spending some time on the next drawing or manga page.

Been very busy these last days. But managed to do a few more exercices.

First a few 5 min gesture practices. Tried to follow some tips from some fellow companions, and I think they worked really well!

Only got to do a few though, I'll have to do some more.

Then I retried some clothing exercices. First round didn't go so well, since I tried to create the clothes fully from imagination.

I mean, it's ok... but I knew there was room for improvement. Got a few tips And retried again, taking my time, placing more attention on the fold shading, and using some references this time.

I think it turned out much better on the second iteration! Learned a lot from it. The one on from the back was intended to be a bit loose, but it probably would be better if it was tighter as per his muscular build.

More than anything, I was happy the second attemtps looked a lot more decent. Progress!

Still working on more exercices. Still looking at the zbrush videos, but my focus is on practicing overall term 3 more and more as I get near to it's conclusion to reaffirm all lessons learned so far.

On the manga side, finished one more page (a few days ago actually), and I've since been working on translation, small details, and I'll do a color piece for the cover this week to get it ready for upload. And then on to chapter 25.

Wew, getting a bit of a headache. Gona go out to take some air and then I'll do some more practice.

Thanks! I actually took a photo of myself and used that as reference for it, since I wanted the shirt to be bit more loose. I am very happy on how it turned out, and I'm using gradient maps more too. I still need to practice these much more though.

These clothing exercises look really impressive, especially the one with color. I always have trouble with clothing folds, so drawings like these look almost like magic to me!

Thanks! I actually feel the same way! I see cloth folds some of my companions here do and I'm blown away on how realistic and elegant their work looks.
It takes some time to get used to, but using Marc's technique for fold shadows from term 2 and using gradient maps (term 2) seems to work really well. And for lineart using a reference is a must (for me), at least until I build a mental library strong enough to do it from imagination.
