Thanks @snakker! If it wasn't obvious already, I love all these exagerated styles from manga, anime and comics. Lots of fun to work with.

Lucky me, had some time to make some progress over the weekend!

Term 4

3 of 10 character studies!

And when thinking of anatomy and muscles, there is hardly a better subject than Dark shine from one punch man! For all his appearances, it was actually hard to find a pic of him at full body.

I tried to change rendering to something a bit more interesting, and make him a bit more menacing. Also tried to give him a bit more of that shine he is known for in the manga. It was a lot of fun to work on this one actually, it was like doing a standard muscles exercice. Though if i'm honest, due to the pose it was just matter of working on one side, mirroring it and then adjusting a few things to get the pose to work.

I guess I really like working with anatomy, which is why I end up doing some fanservicy work lately. I mean, Dark shine is not as fanservicy as much as he is exagerated (unless you're into big bulging muscles, to each their own), but still.

Manga

One more page done! pg 4 of 14 from chap 31!

1) Got some interesting feedfack in the discord. It seems people reading comics online tend to do so on mobiles or portables, so I need to start making sure things are more readable in those devices. "Clarity over artistry" I always say. For starters, I'm lowering opacity on shadows, and high contrast shadows on low scale seem to get a bit weird and distracting. I can't really change lettering for this chapter, but I'll have to look into that as well for future drafts. In general I just need to start taking this into consideration.

2) I'm considering moving to the high contrast ink style manga traditionally uses, as it seems it's more readable in different mediums. I do enjoy the various grayscales style I'm using though. And we'll also see how other hostings or printing works, so I'll see how I adapt things moving forward. Quite a bit to think about.

3) For this page specifically, I really liked how Sari is all serious, thinking all this points to discuss with Iris. Very deep in thought about talking with Iris about Seki (hence the zoom on her face), only to have Iris casually break the ice with the same topic. I just thought it was funny xD.

4) Trying to be subtle on how Iris shows emotions, a bit of conflict as she speaks. Maybe it's a bit too obvious. Regardless, I think it clearly paints the picture of how the whole situations is also challenging for her.

5) Gota love those exagerated Manga expressions. They're a lot of fun to work with. Sari is getting some serious face workout this chapter.

Oh yes I was reading on my phone too and was like its so smol XD which is why webtoon format is different from comic format. However i also want to do comic not webtoon format for my webtoon and I noticed that Par0lell does this really well. I read her short comics well on my phone..

What I've observed is she only cuts her "rows" into three rows

you have 5 rows above, albeit one is a smaller row but imo if you were to make it only 3 rows it would probs make it more readable on the phone. I once screenshotted Parolell's comic and put it side by side with my own to see how big of a font she used (forgot the size) and tried that and it came out relatively ok.

I see, thanks these are good examples! Using 3 rows as a basis makes sense, though my plan for now is to simply send the pages to my mobile and see how it reads, or to emulate a mobile through my browser. Regardless of the row numbers, as long as it's legible in my mobile, I think we're on the right track.

I'll have to reconsider font weight and size as well as overall composition.

I probably won't do it much for the current chapter since I have the lenght, flow and composition locked down, but I'll keep it in mind moving forward and especially when creating the drafts for future work (It's one of the reasons I keep current chapters relatively short, so I can iterate). I mean, I'll still try to adjust what I can for the current chapter, but not by much since I do value consistency as well.

All in all, my intention in the end is to do some prints, but I'm sure I can find a reasonable midpoint, especially since prints might also be of smaller size than letter page (cheaper) and most readers are bound to be digital anyway.

Those are an interesting couple of pages btw! something you're currently working? (though the first two pages seem to be in the wrong order xD)

haha for some reason him being super sparkly makes him look adorable in a way. also I think its the perfect amount of subtleness in her face after all its in manga form and you cant get the super nuances you would like in an animation also it makes it easier for the reader to tell whats happening

It is pain.

I've seen some people who make comic format adjust it later to fit webtoon format but it is a lot of work. Might be more of a problem especially for one person

@patrycja.lerch yea, it is kind of a pain to adapt it later, doing translations already takes some time. I can adjust a few things on style and format so it works for page format and becomes easier to read though. I was also thinking that some of the cheaper printing formats are usually smaller booklets (like manga booklets), so it might actually be better in the long run. All part of the learning process though.

yea thats why imo its best to make a comic - much like Par0lell does where its both printable and readable on the phone so that i won't need to adjust

I've been able to steal even more time from work these days. My schedule can be quite unstable like that, but at least for now we where able to do some more progress.

Term 4

4 of 10 character studies.

Looking for a girl of one punch man, the obvious choices where Fubuki or tatsumaki, but since I did Dark shine last time, figured I would try the closest equivalent for female, Captain Mizuki.

Instead of trying to shake things up, this time I tried to get as close as possible to the original. Murata is one of the best, if not THE best mangaka's artists out there, so just emulating him was a big learning experience. The way he chose to use the lineart, shading, overall form. Even the way he packs little details like the folds in the bikini, almost unnoticeable, or the details in the floatie.

The biggest challenge was getting the form and proportions right (lots of rulers used), but once those were set, it was a lot of fun to render and work on.

Manga

1) Poor Seki is getting friendzoned before even being a friend (or so Sari claims, I suspect she values him a bit more than she says).

2) The overall page is fairly simple in composition. Most pages on the chapter are conversation frames, so, I think it'll be more about expressions and gestures and less about the overall complexity. I'm also reducing luminosity on values and trying to do subtle adjustments to make it easier to read on mobiles. I can't change that much, but I'll continue to attempt to adjust as possible for this chapter.

3) I really like how Sari looks on the big frame. It's simple but for whatever reason I just really like how her expression turned out. I also downloaded a brush that helps making laces much easier.

Not much else to say, I need to get my stuff in my bag and get ready to head out (gym), so I'll leave it at that for now. As always, any feedback is most welcome!

Nice work on Captain Mizuki I remember her fighting monsters with a pole vault.
On page 5, Sari has some good expressions. I feel bad for Seki.

I really love that study nice colors and shape language. I have personally never made a comic before so I'm not sure if there are rules you have to follow, but I would think it would be super cool to see her finger pop out of the frame. make it feel like her finger is poking into your personal space.

@uggievang Figured I would give it a try!

I like it, it does feel like she's poking outside at the reader, even if just a bit, like she's clarifying this point to the reader as well. I tried to make the frame even smaller, but the action lines where hard to be appreciated on the right due to the text bubbles.
