What's up people! I graduated from college and am now dedicating all my time outside work to my hobbies (in order of priority): drawing, learning Japanese, and playing the violin. So here's my art progress for the past two weeks.
Wednesday 12/7:
- Busy with school, so no progress was made this day
Thursday 12/8:
- Continued busy with schoolwork, but I was able to get one image from reference in
Friday 12/9:
- Warmed up with some line art
- Filled a whole page (front and back) with 60-sec gesture drawings
- Practiced figure drawing in 5 minutes or less
- Worked with nonforceful lines to define turning edges and shading areas in poses that I drew with and without FORCE (aka drawing basic shapes first and then connecting them)
- I tried drawing a pose with charcoal for the first time. It felt odd and the pencil was SO hard to sharpen, though the point did come broken from shipping
- I redrew the pose I drew with charcoal on my iPad. Overall, I think the drawing turned out well. However, something about her neck or upper torso doesn't sit well with me (i.e., it looks odd). I would really appreciate some feedback
Saturday 12/10:
- Repeated my lineart exercises as a warmup
- Gesture drew 60-sec poses again, but this time I used a pen
- I tried contour drawing, blind and non-blind (though I tried to look at the paper as little as possible), and it was an experience (as you can see from my drawings )
- I drew another pose from reference and, out of the three, I believe this was my best. Let me know your thoughts
Sunday 12/11 - Thursday 12/15:
- If you have visited my forum before, you probably remember that I started but never finished the Term 1 Perspective assignment. So, during these days, I resumed drawing my room in 1-point perspective on my iPad instead of hand drawing it (because, frankly speaking, I found it easier). This assignment took me roughly 12 hours since I worked on it for four days (12/11, 12/12, 12/14, and 12/15; I skipped 12/13 because I was busy) for 3 hours each. Let me know how my drawing turned out and if there is any room for improvement. And yes, I realize that by posting a drawing of my room I am somewhat doxxing myself
Friday 12/16:
- This was graduation day, so I had to take the day off y'know
Saturday 12/17:
- I started Term 2 by watching Visual Communication 2
Sunday 12/18:
- This was the day I was supposed to post my art progress, but then I looked at my list of commitments from my progress report and realized that I didn't study the human body's anatomical landmarks discussed in Michael Hampton's book and Proko's "Anato Bean" video. So, after practicing my line art and gesture drawing skills per usual, I focused on identifying and memorizing said landmarks.
Key Takeaways:
- Charcoal drawing is...weird
- Landmarks are important to obtain a proportional figure
- I give myself a pass on how long it took me to draw my room but only because this was my first time attempting a perspective drawing. Going forward, I need to get faster and let loose a bit (I was VERY meticulous when drawing my room).
- It's so helpful to draw an H-shape to represent the back of the knee and elbow - thanks Chommang! Here's the video in case you are curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZqcRwXbhLA&list=PLh33PBNTMQJe24b9Mq2T7EHZFOra4Oqqv&index=1&t=377s
Next Week's Commitments [UPDATED]:
- Begin watching Term 2 - Anatomy 1
- Read Chapter 3 of Michael Mattesi's FORCE book
- Practice drawing the a̶n̶a̶t̶o̶ robo bean from the four different torso types: C,S,CS and RS
- Figure draw under 5 minutes and highlight anatomical landmarks
- Draw the three major upper body masses (head, rib cage, and pelvis) using boxes in different perspectives
