Usually a new pattern I start with sketches on paper.

Try to find the silhouette, the pose. When something is found, then move on to digital graphics.

Redid the gun - now the Yule log has roots to grab opponents that they did not run away from a slow bear.

evehartman, thanks for the comment. After that, I realized that we need to focus on strength and aggression hero. Again turned to the references, to finish the bear's hump, made the pose more aggressive, attacking. After all, he is a warrior!)

I don't know if this is your final choice of pose or just the one you picked for colour tests, but I think you picked the weakest one. It's a really slow read; you've kind of reduced all body shapes to a sort of lump:

While it's more of an animation principle, a clear silhouette read can still help the clarity of your image a lot:

Both the other images in the 1/2/3 before the colour test read better than the one you picked, and and honestly the ones before that where you're demonstrating the grabbing roots are also much clearer. =)

Decided to make the hero more slender and athletic. Gone from the image of the wild beast. Even changed the hero weapons. A piece of wood became a piece of piece of wood - dog. She's blind, but very aggressive.
