Bio:
From birth Kanni was different than the rest of her village, that she was born without arms. Her village called her a 'cursed child', the exception being her parents whom loved her unconditionally. Despite the bullying throughout her childhood, she found comfort in the art of fighting when watching the village guardian trained with his pupils. Given private lesson from him, he taught her to be resourceful and how to handle the stresses of the world. One day the village guardian had to leave to aid a neighboring people from invaders. Weeks had passed and the guardian had not returned. The people turned fearful for a potential attack coming their way, for without the guardian they were vulnerable. A messenger soon came to the village to give no information of the guardian but rather a gift box to be given to Kanni. Upon opening, immediately a magical scarf wrapped around her neck. The scarf came to life, forming from the magical cloth to be arms that she never had before. Kanni was shocked by this new change, for she wasn't able to truly master it before the villager’s worst fear had come to pass...An attack. With her new transformation, she quickly jumped into battle, fighting off the invaders with her magical scarf. Punching, blocking, kicking, she fought despite her newness to combat. However, it soon became clear that the scarf required mana for use. Not realising this until it was too late, Kanni grew tired, though she did not waver in the defense of her people. Being exhausted and unable to lift her scarf due to the lack of mana, she found herself being aided by the people whom once despised her for being ‘cursed’. They had found their courage, and the invaders being already weakened by Kanni gave the village guards an advantage to push back the assailants. Now on the retreat, the village was saved by the ‘cursed child’. Soon after Kanni was celebrated as a hero, becoming a respectable part of the village...And now as a Guardian.
ARTIST Notes
Creating this character was a joy to make. I was inspired to create her by my struggle growing up with a disability. The theme of the contest was Light Vs Dark and to me how it reflected the darkness that I overcame mentally but soon found the light that pulled me out from the dark shroud after so long. My brother inspired me to draw without him knowing it. Because of this skill I gained over the years thanks to him, I contribute this character to him. When people look at this character I want them to be inspired to continue on despite the troubles they may face. A beacon of light for others who are struggling through life and finding a purpose. We were all born for a reason, we need to find that magical scarf that lift us to the right direction. Thank you for this opportunity and best of luck everyone.
