Vritra, the justice bringer and ray of hope from the light side!
I had a lot of fun and learned through the process. I truly feel like this has helped me push myself more while doing something I love.
Final reference sheet:
Final Illustration:
If interested in knowing more about the character here's a little bit about her
Vritra the justice bringer:
Raised in the demon realm she grew up learning techniques of torment and destruction, but deep inside something didn't feel right. As she grew older she rebelled more and more against the demon norm.
Despite this, the high commands ignored her rebellious acts. Her power in the battlefield earned her a high position, until the day she refused to cause more damage and let a hostage free.
Vritra was sentenced to public execution as a traitor. She managed to escape, but through her fight for liberty, lost her arm, got one of her horns broken and injured her eye. She sought refuge in the archangel camps, but due to her being a demon the gates were closed for her and was left to fend for herself.
She learned that in the world there was no compassion or solidarity in demons nor angels. They were too busy fighting each other to gain power over humankind. That day, with her bleeding wounds and laying vulnerable in the frozen ground, she made a promise. A promise to bring peace, defend the weak and vulnerable without discriminating between angels, demons or humans no matter their background. She would bring justice to all.
Vritra very slowly recovered. She struggled and faced a lot of pain, but in return, gained immense power and acquired knowledge only before known to archangels and angels. The demon continued developing her destructive demonic strength for protecting the innocent.
She is fearless, strong, but still friendly and compassionate. Vritra roams destroying anything that oppresses the good souls of her world. She is a ray of hope and protection to those that feel ignored, uncomprehended, alone and unimportant. A savior to many, a threat to others. A force not to be reckoned with despite her pretty aspect, Vritra.
Process:
I started with some quick pencil sketches just to grasp a feeling of what she would be like.
As you can see something tragic happened to the left side of her body, she lost an arm, gained a broken horn and injured her eye. This is due to her breaking out of the demon norm and attempting to bring justice and peace.
I tried to color her with some markers I had at hand, but in my opinion, it ended up looking... not too good. It actually made me feel a bit bad since I liked the sketch and line work I did, but not all was lost since this helped me figure out what I wanted her to look like and what color palette I would use.
I decided I would do a digital concept portrait so I could easily switch colors around. I started off with hot pink skin, but I came to realize it maybe wasn't suitable for this time around since it made her look out of place. In the end, I decided to keep her color scheme mostly neutral and warm, but her skin special and different. This has helped me decide what path I'll be following, I will define her more to make the concept sheet <3
Would love to hear your opinions so far!
