The only thing that worked for me in terms of proportion was drawing lots and lots of simple stick people and checking them against known proportion landmarks. I did a zillion of these:
Then would check them against the 'number of heads' proportion:
As you can see, this one I just drew is actually a bit tall, being 8 heads high (I think 8 heads is considered heroic proportion), when the norm is about 7.5. But the landmarks are in the right place. I used Andrew Loomis' proportions as a guide:
and just sketched a lot of stick figures. Eventually, the landmarks become ingrained and you'll be able to feel when they are correct or not.
I dunno if this will work for everyone, but that's how I got used to generic human proportion. Hopefully this will help!
