I dont think its the pose at all that makes it look stiff actually! Making the art less stiff will definitely come with time. I had this issue a lot too for like the first 10 years of drawing, in my opinion lol. I think its the shoulder/arm area thats looking stiff to me. The upper torso. from the chest up to the collar bone. My words aren't the best, but I'm really trying. I can't really explain what I'm meaning unless I was to draw over it.

I really love your dedication and motivation to get better. Your stuff looks awesome. Sure some problems here and there, but you will soon be fixing all of these.

@luke.buersgens Thank you very much for the tips! I will try these ideas and I have a few other ideas for next time around as well! I have been learning the Cavity brush Marc uses as well its half hard and half soft which I do like. Yeah I get confused at times Marc recommends these during feedback and I know he has good reasons. I think I just need to play around with different ways and find what works best for me.

It's always fun to test new brushes ;D
I've personally been limiting myself with using as little brushes as possible and really basic ones too.
It's definitely really important to try and find something what works best for you, also don't forget to have fun ^^ I always forget this part.

Personally, I haven't worked with multiply before for shading and for me it feels kinda odd. I guess it makes sense to seperate shading from colors, because seperating the processes makes them easier to understand as opposed to having to worry about color and lighting at the same time.

It makes blending the shadows harder though and you might want to consider using different layers for different parts of the body, as light and shadow reacts differently on different surfaces.

I just don't know why he'd chose multiply specifically to blend in the shadows.

@Xybb I'm not 100% sure on his reasoning, I think it has to do with flexibility and the ability to change the colors later. He has told me during feedback and showed me how to change the color of them on the multiply layer. But I am like you and don't fully understand his reasoning. However I do know that many times I don't understand something and it makes perfect sense later. I will have to play around with it and see if I can make it work! If not I will have to adjust from there. Thank you so much for all of your advice and help!

This is my work for this week. Mostly I tried to upgrade my mannequin for a more 3d feel, I practiced placing the torso and hips mostly and a few chest muscles. Then I did a few figures and a portrait and a few eye sketches. Feedback welcome as always!

Love the detail and study your putting into this. Looks great. Couple of things that stood out was the right part of the philtrum is too sharp and straight, needs to be blended and more subtle similar to the left. Also the right eye needs a slight highlight on the bridge of the nose and maybe a little bit more shadow between the bridge and eye. Currently the right side of the nose looks flat as it goes towards the eye. Overall though, looks awesome bud. Keep it up.

Damn, you really improved a lot in a short period of time.
I like a lot the value studies defining light and shadow with only two values. All the professional artists always talk about how important is to keep these two areas clear to have a good reading on the image. You are doing great, keep it up!

I have been doing these value studies more regularly before working on a piece and I think it helps quite a bit when working on the final piece! I am still learning quite a bit and I practice very hard each week. Feedback from Marc and the forums definitely helps quite a bit in getting over road blocks so thank you to all for your help!

@charlieodow thanks for checking out my work! I had joined the program originally for map making but I'm not sure now. I'm leaning more towards characters / portraits but we will see how things go! This is my work for the week. I continue to have big difficulties shading on a multiply layer. I am asking Marc about that in feedback this week. I tried really hard to improve my lineart for this piece critique always welcome! Also here are my anatomy notes if anyone is interested.

Pretty unhappy with the shading here, was getting pretty frustrated with it so decided to stop until after this weeks feedback from Marc. Mostly just having difficulties on a multiply layer. But overall I felt really good about my other work this week. Thanks for checking out my work! Feedback always welcome.

Wow those are some really great studies you did! And I love those drawings of yours where you only color with grayscale + skintone + a bit of pink!
One thing I noticed and maybe others haven't pointed it out yet is this shoe:
(I'm not good with words, so I drew over it ) The right knee is facing outwards and the lacing should follow the line of the knee, like on the left side.

This is my finished piece for this week. I spent quite a bit of time playing around with multiply layer for shading, trying many different strategies. I'm not sure if I will stick with shading on a multiply layer or not as I still find it quite difficult to work with and unforgiving. But I wanted to move on from this piece. Feedback always welcome.

@alwaysneedsleep I am in between term 2 and 3. I found it difficult to complete some of the term two assignments without having an understanding of clothing. I had not done any drawing before starting art school so I had little experience to fall back on from in terms of clothing. I also find it difficult to complete term 2 assignments without additional information on values / shading , so I have gone to find other resources for that. I'm not sure if that makes sense. I have not finished term 2 but have been reaching out to other modules / resources to complete these to a level I am happy with.
