Milan - Art School Journey

Hey guys,
I have joined the art school few months back but didnt have any time to dive into it fully.

I have started to doodle at the start of this year when I got my first tablet. I bought it to edit my photos more easily but tried some drawing and got hooked. I spent much more time painting then editing since then
From there I watched probably all tutorials on youtube as well as some paid ones. Problem is that I got better at following tutorials and copying references but I am completely stuck when I have to do any original artwork. I am really hoping this course will help me with that!!

Here are two of my best pieces I've made to date and underneath my best effort from January when I first started playing. I want to post these as a starting point to look back to. They all portraits for some reason

and here is my best effort from January when I had absolutely zero idea what I was doing:

I of course will be very happy for any critique you guys can give me. Either for these portraits or on any future lessons and excercises from Art School

You've got a very solid skill base to work from and I'm sure you'll improve very quickly if you do your homework! I strongly suggest you join the Art School discord, which is a bit more active in terms of feedback and critique. The community is the major value in these classes, so don't miss out.

It's a good idea to maintain your profile page as a portfolio of your assignments, even if you find people don't comment much, we lurk and get inspired!

Today I started working on a figure breakdown with cylinders. I think I grasped the concept ok but still would be very happy if somebody better could spare a minute and give me a few hints. I will do a bunch more soon

I have started with the measured drawing excercise after practising the proportions in the box for a while. I did it enough times to sketch the figure in the box by memory. Excuse the line quality. I didnt try hard to make it pretty and I inked with symetry on this one to spot the differences

Then tried the measured sketching excercise. Had the reference picture one monitor and drawing on another so Im not tempted to cheat and overlap against reference as I go.
I am posting it for a reference point in the future as I cleary have to do a lot of these. It will be good to see progress. Proportions in a sketching phase and line quality are my long term problem

Second one. Added very basic 5 min render just for fun:

And a day 1 of gestures. started with 1 minute. It is terrible. I tried gestures in the past a bit but never got far. Trying to get into habit of doing it every day.

Overall a productive day.

Posting a one week comparison for my gestures. Done some aditional studying and watched a few pros draw them. I think there is a slight improvement in my 1 minute poses but I think there could only be a major one once I know a bit of anatomy.

Havent done much work on measured drawing except a couple of sketches like this one and they are still out of proportions quite a bit.

Finally started to tackle perspective as well. done a few studies and some aditional studying on projected perspective (think might come in handy) It takes a lot to motivate myself as I hated the subject from back when I was at school:). That was way more technical though and Im actually enjoying this. Think I might be ready for the room excercise soon
