The video was quite informative and helpful.
The rule of thirds is quite useful and a very quick way to get composition order in you designs.
As far as one of the scenes from the show Mr. Robot, having the main character in the center of the scene, is a bit more than artistic choice. There are other things going on in the frame, which touches on many historical art principals used by art masters.
As you can see in the screen shot
- The coffee cup and the coffee sign lead right into the main characters head
- The chair and female sitting behind him in the distance add a since of depth which can very well be metaphoric based on the characters personality. These elements in the scene are not accidentally positioned.
- Also to note the character is wearing black which is in direct contrast to the scenes lighting, making him the focal point.
With all of this going on in the scene, the rule of thirds sort of takes a bit of a back seat since the character is place in the center. However, this is not to say that the rule of thirds is not a useful tool by choice. It just depends on artist intent.
I am beginning to refresh myself with these principals myself, being I am just getting back into practicing art myself.
Hope this helps
