I finally finished the portrait from last week and painting curly hair is hard so I just tried to see what works, but I think it comes across as more messy than curly/coily but I'll eventually learn how to paint different hair types and I just honestly wanted to call this done so here's the final result.

Very nice! You're really nailing the values here.
Hair is really hard, kudos for picking something extra difficult to try. I think you're right, the hair does look a bit more messy than curly. I would say you've gone more for strands rather than the coils you were after. You've got good tones on the earring, making it look really rounded, but I think the hair might look more coily if you applied the same technique for the hair, as in treating each "strand" as a rounded loop, just like with the earring. AKA, each coil has a dark side and a light side.
All in all, this is a really cool study, it looks like you really pushed yourself and learned a lot! Well done!

Thanks, I might revisit it later this week because I got some feedback on the discord on how to improve on it as well. I'll definitely keep that advice for the hair in mind if I revisit it later

I have been busy doing term 3 stuff and started doing the anatomy 2 class last week, so I practiced some trace overs of the torso muscles and I did a figure drawing this week as well

Here is my irregular post update for the month of all the things I have been working recently. Like I said last time I moved on to term 3 and I have now moved to term 4 to take the notes on arm and leg anatomy, so when I do anatomy studies I can swap between them during the week to get equal coverage of all the muscles. I still am doing drawovers since I still don't feel like I am ready to try drawing them onto a skeleton yet. I have kept up doing gesture at least once a week and also have gotten back into doing figure studies daily now alongside learning anatomy. I know that they aren't perfectly accurate but I am trying to not act so strict about accuracy and just worry about the feeling of the pose and trying to learn to push the pose more in both my gesture and figure drawings. I also have moved on to arm studies as well trying to train my eye to see the muscles better.
My first arm study was a fail so I decided to try on body builders instead next time(today)

This one was hard because I couldn't imagine what the rest of the back looked like behind the hair

I also feel like I have improved my observation skills and improved in speed because what used to take me 2-3 hours it now takes me 1 hour to get the base gesture sketch and fixing the sketch on top after observing what I can see and flipping the canvas after I finish correcting, but I still get some things wrong since when I drag it on top to compare it requires me another 30 minutes to 1 hour of correcting after that.

and here is my most recent study on the arm muscles any feedback is welcome and hope that you all had a great Christmas or whatever you celebrate this time of year.

I also finished a painting two weeks ago at least half rendered, but I wanted to just call it done and move on to something else project-wise. I never realized until after this how long you can render something and how many passes you can do for stuff like lighting, shadows, Ambient Occlusion, & hair etc. I am pretty happy with where it is now even though I could do more on it. I hope everyone has a good rest of their year and they reach their art goals or new years resolutions next year successfully.

Thanks, that means a lot to hear, I do feel like my painting skills have improved a lot since I first started this year, but I still have a lot to learn when it comes to rendering!

yeah I agree as well I do a lot of line heavy stuff in my studies but I'm trying to get more into personal work so I try to improve and experiment with shading and rendering there
