Hey SamuraiSingh! Firstly; love your blog! Your consistent commitment and the improvement is really inspiring!
Now I’m only a beginner myself, so I can only repeat the same stuff people have told me because I don’t really have the experience, but there are several conscious things I try to do which have improved my (still pretty poor) line quality!
- Consciously making an effort to draw from the elbow/shoulder and only using the wrist for short, sharp lines
- Committing to a line all the way through with one swift, smooth motion and not doing a series of smaller, scratchy lines
- As Nosnibor mentioned, ghosting a line - I find this really helpful for longer lines especially!
You’ve probably already heard of it, but there’s a free online art course called Draw-A-Box which is specifically covers the fundamentals of drawing - including lines.
I didn’t do all of it, but if you’ve never given it a try, the first lesson is specifically about repeating exercises to improve mark-making confidence and control. I’ll be honest - it’s boring. It’s really, really boring - but I found it immensely helpful and I did see improvement with my lines and confidence, so may be worth checking out!
Good luck and keep on keeping on!
