A little bit distracted today and went off on a tangent adding too many tiny details and light to my 1PP room.

I haven't done any light, shadow or colour tutorials before and it's frustrating knowing how far away I still am because I'm still grappling with basic forms and perspective.

Still, small steps and all that.

Theres nothing wrong with being far away from your end goal (at least thats what I always tell myself ), how would you feel about your art if it actually came easy? not that great of an accomplishment then, huh?

I think you did a good job on that room! It's true, the light from the TV is a little odd, but even without having watched any tutorial on lighting, you could look up a reference image of a TV in a dark room, observe it and try to apply what you see

Always look for the mistakes you are making, accept them and ask yourself, what you can do to no make the same mistake in the future!

You're right, Mau. It's one of those things where I just wish I'd started learning much sooner than I finally did!

I've done most of the assignments for term 1, now I think I need to just spend some time repeating them and really analysing which bits aren't sinking in.

Some gesture drawing for today. I definitely don't have the observation skills yet to properly capture something in 30 seconds, so I slowed right down and took 3-5 minutes with some of the poses just to try and process them.

Time to get my head down and study.

Forgot to add my 2 point perspective practice.

Just playing with colour really, not trying to do anything serious with it.

Repeated the measurements assignment quite a few times now and gradually removing aid markers until I'm doing everything purely by eye. Though sometimes I nail one and then feel like I've immediately gone two steps back because I mess up the most basic observations with the next one.

Some 45 second gestures. Decided to pick up speed and not worry too much about accurate proportions, just focusing on flow and making them gestural.

And some 3-5 minute poses.

I know that small improvements will keep coming with constant repetition, but I might make a start on the term 2 anatomy tutorials to add some new assignments in and give me some variety.

I really like your gesture drawings! The lines are so smooth and fluid.
Also, nice job with the heads on the measured figure studies. After you overlap the line drawing do you go back and correct everything? That helps me keep my mistakes at the forefront of my mind the next time I draw.

Thank you! And no, I don't correct them, that's a good idea actually.

I usually bring up my most recent attempt right before starting a new one and just check to see which lines I have strayed on the most. Maybe I will start doing the corrections at this point too just to really make it clear in my mind.

Little 2 point perspective sewer I fancied doing for fun before starting the anatomy class.

Might revisit it to fix bits, add detail and lighting when I reach the later terms.

I like the little details like water ripples, brick textures and pipe dents. The way the large tunnel converges to the right seems a little weird to my eyes but I can't pinpoint what it is - all your lines meet up with the vanishing point perfectly. Nice work!

You're right about the tunnel, I think it might the general lack of any detail down there in comparison with the rest of the page.

I looked at this without paying close attention and thought "This is an interesting room... Where's the mattress for the bed?" Then I looked at your comment and saw sewer Interesting subject choice, it looks cool!

I'm not sure what inspired it to be honest, I think I just wanted to practice drawing a tunnel in perspective.

Anyway, in between doing the term 2 photoshop assignments I went back and applied my rudimentary understanding of colour for fun.

Not quite had the time to finish the anatomy lecture yet, which is probably a good thing as I seem to have forgotten how to draw cylinders.

I did pages and pages of intersections to get it through my head for Drawabox and am still fairly comfortable with it, but now I'm struggling to picture how a bendy/snaking cylinder occupies 3D space.

This is the first page for the anatomy assignment that I did, I think I've just about got it now. What do you think?

Forgive the scribbles where I'm trying to work things out, I always find it helps me a lot when I scribble rough lines. I didn't bother shading those ones.

What's your process when you draw the snaking cylinders? Do you make the outline first or draw the ellipses first?

@LesleyCarol I usually use lay down a sketch of the minor axis and direction it snakes and then add the ellipses to each end before connecting them up. If I want to be extra precise I'll add more ellipses in between to make sure I'm not making it veer too wide or narrow.

The point where they turn is what I struggled with, finding it difficult to place the contour lines on the curves.

For the turns it's good to just follow the curve of the circle for the outside. For the inside follow the ellipses on the top and bottom and then erase the line on the bottom.

I apologize for the scratchy lines. I definitely need to practice more too.

It might help to draw a bunch of donuts:

I didn't erase the bottom line on the left side to better illustrate what I meant.
Also, try using the ellipse tool every now and again if you have trouble getting perfectly round edges.
