Nice job on the face studies. I’m far from being able to achieve this at my level, but actually gave that a shot while doodling yesterday and struggled hardcore 😂

I think it cones down to having a very clear and literal idea of the subject’s skeletal structure, placement and shape of features.

In these I think you have to be very careful as tiny changes make a big difference. For example in the top left one the shape of the forehead looks different and the placement of the ear suggests up tilt of the head while the jaw remains at the same level as the head next to it suggesting there is no tilt

Apart from that being careful with the distance between nostrils as in one head the nose seams bigger, especially since it’s stylistically reduced in detail, it makes a big difference in my opinion

That would be my two cents, but overall these look really good and I think the style is pretty cool too

Oh also, noted that in the middle bottom face, I think the heads of the eyebrows would elevate slightly as the middle fibers of the frontalis contract in conjunction with the corrugators- giving the tilt, rather than lowering the tails of the eyebrows too much into the orbit woth the orbicularis contraction - they tend to stay where they are or just barely go down unless the orbicularis contracts very hard like when closing the eyes shut

Thanks for the feedback @snakker. Yeah I see what you mean with the forehead, gotta stick to the guidelines especially for establishing angles, sometimes you get lost in the sketching. But I do tend to struggle with the forehead hairline.

@snakker, again good points. I knew drawing these that having consistency between the noses was going to be challenging for me. I still don’t know how to correctly place the bulb of the nose, and then everything else falls apart. Any tips? That’s some good points with the eyes, having a mirror in front of me would probably help with referencing what part of the face remains stationary and what actually moves. Cheers for the feedback

Unfortunately I’m still stumped 😅 at this point at least I learned to place the bulb as the most prominent sphere on the pyramid, placing on the symmetry line between brow line and the horizontal extended from the lateral plane that cuts at the side of the sphere using the loomis method
I also apply the rule of not placing nostrils higher or larger than the bulb, mouth is usually just a bit wider than nostrils. Problem is, once tou start playing with “3/4” and similar tilts perspective starts playing tricks 😂

Trying to play with lighting. Quite difficult, especially from below lighting. Gotta get the head around where to highlight harder and ease back on other parts.

Also not overly happy with the Lineart either. Hmmm…

That looks difficult! You could try a maquette, toy, bust or 3D model to help as reference

This is an app I got yesterday called head model studio, i set spotlight from below but having a midel with more planes costs money 😔

A few days early but here is my third manga page. Some parts I’m happy with other parts not at all. Struggled with the hatching and also clothes, was finding it difficult to work out tension points, I felt like I was over thinking it too much. The part I struggled with when hatching was, well a lot of it. When do I use it, what parts, what direction, do I use it with shadow as well or the hatching is strong enough for shadow by itself. Struggled a lot. Please if anyone has tips of tricks they know for this piece it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks 🙏

Yo this is looking really good
I can see the difficulty in the hatching department, thiugh I have ñittle experience in conveying motion by these means - I can just point out what seems to me a bit off

In the first frame, the motion lines don’t contrast much when on the subject only against the background so they become a part of his silhouette. To me it makes it look like he’s furry or hairy but I can inderstand that the intention is movement. Don’t know if it would work, but perhaps breaking the silhouette with brighter streaks or just breaking his outline might help 🤔

Sorry for the late reply @snakker, I really appreciate the feedback, it’s most welcome. You might be right @snakker, it does look a little furry, perhaps I have to make it more obvious that they are speed lines, or like you said contrast more. I’ll take this into consideration next time I have another motion centric panel.

My latest page. Still playing around with different techniques, just experimenting with what works for me, this one was a little rushed, esp first cell. Still lots to improve, @snakker still not nailing the speed lines tbh, not sure if it’s the poses as well as the speed lines that don’t give off the feeling of momentum but will keep going. Still also juggling continuity with the same character in different frames. Hard to exaggerate facial expression while maintaining consistency. Again any feedback most welcome.

These are looking better, but yeah, still difficult. I think a bit more contrast between his left bicep and chest would help make the pose pop a bit more
