@big-misch Thanks! More to come for sure, though I'm very slow in creating my illustrations @natallia I paint my illustrations from scratch, without 3D or photos, sometimes I help myself with reference, but I never copy it exactly, unless it's a study. I Used to paint in SAI but now I've switched to Photoshop (starting from Rei everything is in PS). As far as creating feel of volume, studying perspective and how light interacts with form really helps. Mannequin studies of a figure do help a lot too. It's also a very good Idea to think of the object you draw being volumetric. I hope it helps, I'm not very good at explaining.
Anyway here's a portrait study. I tried
thanks a lot! I'm not very good at using PS for now that's why i was wondering if this effect can be reached in PS from the picture which doesn't have volume itself. But if I understood you right, you paint every single detail, every shadow and all the effects you want, than take a photo and slightly modify in PS?
@natallia I paint, look at photo or at real life if I need, and then paint again, to put it simply. There isn't anything except painting in picture itself in other words. And also 99% of the time I paint on normal layers. So yeah it doesn't really require any special knowledge or software. You just grab a brush, pick a color and paint Knowing PS is helpful, but it won't magically make paintings better.
So I have this dude turned 4 years recently I also did a new painting and started an artstation https://www.artstation.com/artist/amifluffy
Few quick portrait studies. Need to do a lot of these really, can't draw faces for life

great great work . its awesome and the consistent way you study just shows what a great artist you are, ill keep an eye on you !
@HorizonDwellerThank you for kind words
Still working on portrait sketches. Will keep doing these for a little while I guess.
I wanted to paint something softer and brighter, so here is TemariAnd this
Didn't post anything here in a little while, so I will probably make few posts with what I have piled up over the time. There isn't too much though, I've spend a lot of time experimenting, doing random stuff and throwaway sketches and studies here is the first one
You've improved a lot since your last post. Those studies seem to have helped. Nothing much to add. Adding a stronger rim light to have it stand out more is the only thing I think you can do. The blue rim doesn't make it pop off the background as much. It looks nice nonetheless. Nice colors and clean render all around.
Keep up the good work.
@malcom Thanks, although I feel more like I've just changed the approach and improved my confidence a little
Hands
Hi! The way you render looks fantastic! Especially the clothing (:The only thing I can say is to maybe add a bit more color variations to the skin, maybe even some imperfections to break it up a little.Nice work!
That demon girl looks pretty sweet! There's definitely some solid of improvement compared to your work a few months back.
Keep it up!
Awesome. If you can put it into words, I would like to hear your thoughts on how you changed your approach. Great studies. Love those hand studies a lot.
@JannaSophia Thank you. I will definitely work on it. I actually even do add those variations? but I tend to be way too subtle with them so it's barely visible. I tend to have too soft contrasts too, probably for the same reason of unconfidence. Fighting with it for a long time
@cedricgo Thank you
@malcom There isn't really that much to say. I knid of used to start with color block-in and than polish everything. But for last 8-10 month I spent a lot of time trying to improve my skills of drawing in line (it all started with all those clothed figures you can find a bit earlier in the blog). I dedicated a lot of time to that and gladly have seen at least some improvement. At least it's not that painful anymore to draw in lines without zoom Although I diverged for a couple months to draw simplistic anime girls, just cause I felt like doing it. Somewhat helped to look at things in a more simple way, probably. So these few ladies on a black backgrounds started with a more solid drawings rather than color blobs, that's probably the difference, other than just raw improvement over time. Good drawing definitely helps to render itself. The irony is I'm planning to go back to color block-ins although with a very rough pose drawing in place. Will see how it works out
I totally get it. Having nice lines does help a lot. Anyway thanks for replying. Keep up the good work. Good hands as well.
