Hello everyone! The name's Chloe but some people call me Doi for short and I'm 20 year old aspiring artist living in England, West Midlands.
I'm super pumped for this because I had begun to grow an interest in concept art and character design after I started playing games some time last year but I had no idea where to begin so I think this challenge is going to really help.

If you have any advice or feedback, please let me hear it, I'd be really grateful.
At this moment in time, I don't have much of a background for my character, hence why I haven't given her a name yet.

I did a few sketches, just trying to figure out just some sort of general idea of what she may look like. I've never started out like this before so it was pretty fun to give it a go. There was one that stood out to me more than the others so I decided to work into it. (The examples below are where I worked into it.)

After that I decided to work into the two sketches a little more.

I liked both but I wasn't fond on some bits so I decided to mix and match bits that I liked till I had some sort of idea that I'd like more. Number 3 is the mixed version that I like.
At this moment in time, I have no idea what half the stuff on her body is, I just wanted some sort of general shapes to her.
I'll work into her a little more and then do a few more sketches later where I begin to figure out what things are on her.

I've finished the touch up and looking at it, I know I'm definitely not satisfied with the clothing at all. I kind of like the hair but who knows, it might change as I do more revises. The anatomy is a bit dodged too but luckily it's only a draft.

So I quickly began to redesign the clothes, there's still some of the old aspects there but not really as much. I think the other design looked a little too fluffy for me and less mystical. Kinda looked more like she was going to hunt a bear while she was half naked.

This is the final clothing I'm happy with, I'm just not sure on the hair. The first one is a hood of some sort, the second is a pony tail, the third is her original pulled back pony tail, the fourth is her hair plainly falling from her head and curling inwards and the fifth a side plait/braid. (Just in case anyone can't make out my scribbles.)

I like number 1 and number 5, to me they look greater than the rest!

Yeah, I feel as if 5 completes the design for now but I'm also super attached to 4 (I just really like pony tails.)

Oh wow!
The difference from your first design to the latest one is amazing!
I like the ponytail in number 5.
I think you have a really great base to explore and be creative with your design.

So I began to work off these again (I still wasn't happy) but I couldn't figure out which ones I liked. I know it sounds a bit silly but I liked them all. So instead, I coloured them (badly) in black to figure which ones would have the most interesting shapes.

I ranked them and sure enough, I agreed with the 'ranking' after I'd taken away the all black area.

I'm going to do some proper sketches with the ticked ideas and then I'll narrow it down even more and begin to work on her weapon(s). Do any of you agree with the ranking system?

I like the first and the sixth design. I think the fourth doesn't have as an interesting shape to the overall character, and for some reason, I like the shape the other two designs form. I think it will define her better.

I like number 5, the one you're doubtfull about :P, the last one I also like though if you're planning to paint those sleeves semi-transparent then I'll love it! otherwise it seems it's over-detailed, I also like number 5's cleavage, looks much more sexy. I absolutely love the dress

So I finally began to sketch up her final concept. I say final but I know I'll probably change a few things. I'll figure out what does and doesn't work after I've done a few sketches of her.
Surprisingly the hair was the most difficult. I'd decided on a ponytail earlier on but after drawing it with the completed outfit, it just didn't sit right with me. It felt too... cliche? So I tried out various hairstyles and it took ages to finally come to this one and I think it's suits her and it's complete like this.

So I began to do the line art and refine things. I wanted to concentrate on not making her face like every other face I draw. I wanted her to have a rather flat face, a prominent top lip, a long sort of flat nose, short eyebrows and quite large ears. Her lips were going to be bigger/longer but it felt more harmonized to have them quite small (they may not look small to others but they're small for me.)

I discovered that I preferred a round cape unlike the original where it was pointy. It just felt more balanced to me. I'm going to be working on some sketches later on so I can figure out if there's anything there anything that needs to be eliminated or is just unnecessary for her character. I also need to start working on a name, I think I'll be looking at some greek names like I was before.
I have no clue as to what her colour scheme will be, I feel her hair's going to be dark and she might be quite tanned but that's all I can figure out for that. I think she may wear oranges and purples but I'll just have to see.
Please, let me know what you think of her current design, whether you like parts of it or not.

A few sketches of her. I think I'll start on her concept sheet either today or tomorrow after figuring out her colour scheme. It took me a lot of scanning to figure out what name to finally give her.

I've never drawn armor so this was weird. I should have probably researched before I attempted drawing it.
To be honest, I think my final piece may be slightly more realistic but I'll just have to see as I go along.

I'm currently trying to figure out the best composition for my final piece. I like the bottom two most, I think.

So I tried out Krita for the first time and I really loved the brushes, they made it a lot easier to paint.
The downside was that I decided to paint in black and white so that I could use gradient maps but because my computer is so slow, it wouldn't load the preview so I ended up just using curves.
It was probably a silly move on my behalf seeing as colouring is a major part of my style.
This isn't the final piece or the result I wanted but I ended up with an extra random illustration for my deviantart gallery, I guess!
