Ahhhh that is a very good point, I think more human scale guys in the background will certainly help but I think I might try and make the other giants somehow more distant or even simply make them smaller too

Throughout the painting of the army general seen above I knew I wanted to reuse the background to make a painting of the city because of the really strong perspective and scale ambiguity it has. So, here is a scene of one of the inner city areas. The newer flashier buildings are really just built over the top of the old city as there isn't enough space for new building plots, nor budget to rebuild the residential areas that would be demolished.

I'm planning to go back and add some more details, such as a helicopter using the landing pad on the building to the right but I found I was just noodling over this piece and really needed to see it as finished

The scouts from before are moving further through the abandoned human territory. I liked the idea of making these orcs quite laddish, more relatable than the standard portrayal where they always seem so serious and focused on war. That being said, I'm not sure I really managed this, partly because they're too far away in this composition, so I'm going to try and feature this in a later illustration.

I wanted to draw the human's equivalent of a scouting squad.
For this piece I stuck almost entirely to painting except for a small bit of texturing right at the end. Really I think this is the best way to do it as I can't rely on textures to sell the image yet I can still get the aesthetic benefits

hahaha alas no, but I am flattered xD I've yet to find work yet which is why I have so much time to do all this back story. It's really all practice and portfolio building
Also I'm kinda unfamiliar with Destiny but I can really see what you mean having googled it quickly, it's got the same military chunky style of halo with a load more curves mixed in xD

First of all i love this pic, astonishing amount of detail and i think you represented the Artwar theme really well.
To add depht you could extend the lower portion of the picture a bit and put some big foreground troops visible just in portions (a defocused head silhouette here and there), it would reinforce the scale more. what is playing not well is that farther you go bigger the creature size become (meant in canvas space) there are just tiny elements that shrink with the distance (a small corner with knights , couple on the bottom and the ones launched in the air ) i supposed the armoured guys are a sort of giants?
an other option would be to rescale some troops to give a more unified look (croc and armoured guys smaller, and the horse close to the troll a bit bigger)

The latest rendition. I can see bits that I want to tidy up and detail but otherwise It'd be really helpful if you could critique any parts you think could be improved in terms of composition or value structure

I'm already sorry about that critique but...If I 'm correct G.A.I.A is fighting against all the beast and creatures at once right ?
So why are they (some) looking on other directions ?

A simple correction would be to add some infantry, tanks or whatever by your machine side (on right sure). Even few ones...

Don't take that critique into account if you think this is a bad one...Plus reading some of your backstory I think this is making a total good sense that G.A.I.A is alone.
I feel already so ashamed to post that, because I really like this artwork (and everything you did honestly - where is the movie ? ).

And well if you feel the need to critique my piece one day or another do as you please. Constructive criticism is what pushing every artist beyond their own limits I guess ?

Hahah don't be sorry, you make a very good point that I've been thinking about a fair bit. The illustration of the human's walking tank above actually started as part of this illustration, the problem was, being quite large it couldn't actually fit into the foreground whilst still being to scale. I then figured that in terms of tactic from the human's point of view having troops anywhere near G.A.I.A is probably a bad idea given the unpredictability of her attacks.
Sooooo, I have decided one of thing I can do it to have some projectiles from the human side visibly coming through the cloud of dust. Other than that I may hint at some ground troops right in the front right of the image.
Thanks alot though as I may have neglected doing anything about it xD
Also I was considering how I could make a half jokey mockup of a movie trailer using fair simple slideshow animation of the paintings I've done I might still try it if I find the time....

First of, wow dude, So much work and ambition! You are true inspiration and I admire your work. One small detail though, when I see what you can do and I look at your piece.. I feel like there is something missing, I don't know why but as someone mentioned before, she seems to lack force and her arm covering her takes away the focus from her. Thats just how I feel, maybe its helpfull maybe not. Hopefully I don't sound disrespectfull, truly admire your work.

@Skogman Thanks, and I really know what you mean. I intend to really make her face alot better, possibly ditch my previous idea of having it constantly calm and placid simply to get some more emotion in there but i'm not sure... I will definitely be putting on some degree of blur to the final image that should help and also to fade alot of the surrounding contrast out to draw the eye to the motion primarily.

@berrysquare I'm really glad it looks that way xD I am definitely going to compile all the work I've done for this competition somehow and clean everything up simply for my sake. I doubt I'll go as far as printing it in a book but it depends, i might feel more emotionally attached to it if it actually manages to come in the top 5 after judging

I realised that before I go and tidy up my illustration I should finalise parts the design properly (especially the human robotic section on her back which I will need to do some explaining for at some point) As such I've started the important parts of my concept sheet, the lineart (and oh god does clean lineart take a long time xD) I'm going to try and introduce more varying lineweight to help with the read and then simple cell shading. C&C very much appreciated before I spend any more time on these
