Story
My champion exists in a alternate timeline for Earth wherein religion separated theists from atheists. There remained wildly different religions, the beliefs and practices of which drove diverging evolution between them. This created the magic wielding and hugely diverse creatures of the fantasy world. Meanwhile those which followed and evolved with their advancing technologies created what we'd recognise as normal humans who inhabit the sci-fi world.
The fantasy and sci-fi people have existed as natural enemies and the outbreak of a world war between the two is inevitable. As such the G.A.I.A project was formed to create an ultimate weapon to use against the fantasy army.
Scientists realised that there must really be some supernatural power that the fantasy people have seen as their deity and has sourced the energy they use in their magic. Plans to retrieve and harness this power in the form of a giant piloted mech was clearly the coolest approach, but for the sake of the story was also deemed to be the best solution. Just like the fantasy peoples prayer and rituals, the power of the Globe could only be accessed by an intelligent mind, however with almost direct contact and advanced technology this power could be used without limit.
An so, G.A.I.A was created and won the epic battle between the forces of sci-fi and fantasy.
I've put these all on the concept sheet but I thought it'd be nice to have them all in one place plus I can put a bit more story with them:
Extraction of the Globe:
A technician is accompanied by his research drone while searching for signals that may indicate the Globe's location.
After the strongest signals have been located large scale excavation starts as the signals are weak and widespread.
Several layers deeper they discover an inclosed cave system which seems to be leading in the right direction.
Scientists enter, all connected with tethers to ensure safety and reliable relay of recorded data as drones are no longer reliable in this sort of environment.
Several days after discovery of the central chamber holding the Globe, pathways and permanent lighting has been set up allowing easier transfer of equipment. Preparations for excavation have also started with the decision to remove the Globe through a vertically drilled tunnel.
The tunnel is excavated and the winches erected to pull the Globe out.
The Laboratory
The Pilot of G.A.I.A and our protagonist, Eva has doubts about the whole G.A.I.A program. These are the living quarters inside the desert laboratory that curve around the outside of the building's hemispherical shape being one of the only places with access to natural light. The ozone layer surrounding this area is severely depleted, being the cause of the desert's origianl formation. therefore the buildings need to be insulated from UV radation and suits must be worn when outside.
This is the central area of the desert laboratory. Construction of G.A.I.A was moved to the desert because the Globe was too large and potentially dangerous to move long distances.
This is the initial build of G.A.I.A however once the Globe was installed much of it's appearance morphed from having it's power supply connected with the Globe. The supporting and restriction arms on the back of G.A.I.A were kept on a separate power supply to control G.A.I.A and server the connection with the Globe should it become out of control.
The Military general, in charge of the G.A.I.A program and owner of a very fancy looking office.
Inner City
A look at some of the inner city areas. Much of the Earth has become uninhabitable so population in cities has become much denser rather than cities expanding. As such much of the new architecture is simply build atop the old city creating a very clear divide between (literally) 'upper' and 'lower' classes.
Abandoned Land
A group of scouts from the fantasy army are scouting through the lands long abandoned by humans who could no longer survive in the climate and weak ozone layer.
I wanted to create an opposite version showing some of the sci-fi ground troops however ultimately these designs didn't feature in my illustration.
After the giant battle, our protagonist makes it out alive, if exhuasted to the point of unconciousness and demands that G.A.I.A be immediately decommissioned and returned. Struggles between the once united sci-fi people came with the loss of their common enemy. Despite the military generals reluctant agreement to decommission G.A.I.A higher political forces took control of the program. After multiple internal power struggles and misuse of G.A.I.A, distaster befalls the program and half of the humans colony is wiped off the map in an immense explosion.
the moral here of course is to not mess around with nature 
(oh and climate change is real)
