Thanks for the feedback @kernelpanic! I wasn't sure if the arrow's direction in #1 ruined the flow or not. I'm glad that at least in the thumbnail it looks okay I'll try another version that's zoomed out a little more to see if that improves it.

@Steve_Kim Ha, yes, the struggle with distance is real 😂 I'm working on a few new sketches now that explore different angles. I'll also take your advice to zoom out on Ignacia. Thank you for the critique!

Thumbnails again! I tried 1 and 2 zoomed out, and also some new versions.

1 and 2:

3 - Ignacia diving with her tiger (who will catch her later! ) Secondary battle blurred out in the background.

4 - Vertical comp with some environment showing, and hopefully a dragon that is far enough away this time!

I like 3 a lot, but I may go with 4 since I think it tells a better/clearer story. Thoughts always appreciated! Thanks for all the great suggestions so far

I ended up combining elements of a few of them to get this version, which I think I'm going to stay with. It's a little calmer than the battle scenes, but hopefully still epic enough.

Now onto real values....Hurry hurry hurry!

@mr_dessin I'm going for either sunrise or sunset! Eventually there will be a dramatic shadow across the lower portion to help frame it a little better 😊 Good luck to you too! Hopefully the balance between important details/background stuff is sorting itself out now.

Yeah I'm not really sure if I'm really finding the good balance between details etc...
Anyways, time will tell (where is the armageddon Artwar clock ? XD), but for now I'm trying to do many colour schemes, because honestly I don't really know which atmosphere I really want.

Started working in some color today. I did the tiger first this time since that's the hardest part. (I don't know why drawing cats is so difficult for me, but it is! ) I still have to finish the wings and get back to detailing Ignacia. At least I was able to salvage the bow from my first attempt!

The shadding is already looking good, but I think you are losing yourself in the values.

Values are something that I struggled with for a long time. You should read this, it really helped me:

Also, try to not rush into the details. See the painting as a whole and work on the shapes and atmosphere first. Then you choose where the viewers focus should be, and add the details to those areas, which, for your painting, are the faces and hand - bow, everything else is secondary.

If everything is important, nothing is.

Other than that, keep it up. You are in the right path.

Ah, thanks so much @alykam! I've had a hard time making progress lately because I know something's off/missing...but I couldn't figure out what. The article made it much clearer. I'll adjust my values again and see if I can work in more economy of detail. I ALWAYS put too much...and then end up blurring out most of it later, which is a waste. Thanks again for the critique!

That's a really great article. I'm struggling with value balance in my composition, too, so it will help out to have that info on hand.

I'm amazed at how critical you have been with your own art at this stage, but its worth the hassle of understanding the way your painting should sit. Just keep experimenting and having fun with the process of it.

nice solution to your composition struggles I think these sort of hero shots can work out better than "action" shots! One thing I would like to see is the intimacy of the relationship between the beast and your character pushed even more. Since she's not directly mounting on the beast, maybe she can have one hand on it instead of the way she's holding her bow and arrow right now?

I feel like you decided to show her in that pose because you wanted to show the magic effects of her arrow, but I feel like her current action-readying pose MAY (or may not) seem a bit odd for the current set up you have right now? Maybe you can do a separate magic effect call out and include it as a part of your concept sheet?

these are VERY PERSONAL opinions and by all means I don't intend to criticize that your decisions are wrong!!! You are doing great, keep up the good work

Okay! Progress, finally

Oooohhhh the hassle, @jblunar ...but yes, I am learning. Before, I would just think "It stinks!" and stop there. Now I ask, "Why does it stink? And how can I fix it?"

After reading that lovely article (thanks again @alykam!), I was able to adjust values with much more clarity of purpose.

Also I tried a more relaxed pose for Ignacia (because yes, the stiffer version was feeling odd to me too @Steve_Kim! Thanks for the input) Heroes relax between battles, right? Or maybe she's just that confident before heading into the next fray...

Bonus for me--quite coincidentally, I was able to salvage more pieces of my original draft for this version. I still have to fix the lighting on a bunch of things and make some new parts, but yay! Faster than I was expecting.

I make a lot of adjustments as I work, so the values are probably going to shift some more. Hopefully in a good way, though. Thanks for all the encouragement and helpful critique everyone! <3 Onward and upward...

I love the very gentle light on the left of her battle companion's face, keeping it in the shade definitely defines hierarchy of importance, plus it's going to assist in drawing more attention towards Ignacia herself.

I honestly love this concept for its own merits of portraying a personality, the way the two characters behave when interacting with each other draw out a really engaging narrative of dependence and respect, keep up with this wonderful work!

great colors..in my opinion lengthening the arms a bit more and blurring out the tigers face would make the main character stand out more and for a more dynamic image.nice overall though.
