Just found out about this, so I'm a bit late to the party but...hi!
waves awkwardly

Anyway, I love both fantasy and sci-fi stuff. But today I am on TEAM FANTASY!
My character is Ignacia, queen of a matriarchal society called "the She." Her weapon is Lyn, legendary bow of the She, which is capable of shooting lightning when the archer has a strong enough bond with it. Ignacia has been the first person to unlock this potential for a hundred years. Like all the She, Ignacia rides a fiery gryphon into battle.

Here's my first pass at Ignacia's design:

I'd appreciate any critique! Lyn the bow is looking pretty plain so far...any suggestions there?

And this is what my painting layout is looking like so far. (Very rough, early stage :O) I think I may play around with the composition more. What do you guys think?

Your way of laying out your composition is really exciting, it gives off so much energy. Personally I feel like the overall flow of the image is also good, as the tiger disappears into the focal point around the arrow, but it could be that its eyes draw a lot of the attention if they glow like they are do in the rough. Anyway, i'm no professional tutor, I'd love to hear what you think of it as it is.

Ah, you're right. I'll need to be careful with the tiger's fire. Don't want it distracting from the heroine! I'll try to fix that when I get to the value stage. Thanks for the feedback

Some progress from this afternoon! Cleaned up lines for the action shot and tweaked the composition ever so slightly. I kept @JBLunar's suggestion in mind here...there will still be fire in the tiger's eyes, but the brightest area will be around Ignacia's bow. See the lightning?

I also added some carvings and flourishes to Lyn, the bow. And I redid Ignacia's belt. Now the buckle makes sense! Lol

Next up: values. Thanks for the critique so far!

I tried out three color schemes today. Which one do you guys like best? I think I'm leaning toward the second one, but I'm open to suggestions!

Also, another illustration WIP. Working on the values. This time I did the face detail first for some reason! It's getting there...

nice! to me, it feels like all 3 color variants were pretty similar, because the colors you chose are all pretty local. I would try using different colors that aren't so local, that way you can create focal points by color as well

illustration looks great, but I would suggest you figure out the color scheme of your character before you start the value structure of the illustration, because different colors have different values.

Keep up the good work, cant wait for more!

Thanks for the great feedback @Steve_Kim and @rgdraw!

I kept the favorite option from yesterday, but went ahead and tried a couple more combos this morning--specifically aimed to pick colors outside of the range I used earlier, as suggested. The feathers stayed pretty much the same, but that's mostly because her gryphon is a tiger...and it didn't feel right whenever I switched them to a color other than orange

I like the blue hair from the middle combo, but so far I'm still leaning toward the red-armor version. As always, thoughts or critiques appreciated!

Yep I'd go with the red too. I find the purple on the middle of her dress thing a bit distracting i'd make it red too and save the purple for the hair and face to draw some focus there. Good luck

Now I can continue with the values!

The colors came out really nice. For me it resembles royalty and the Fire Nation clothing from The Last Airbender. The purple hair gives a nice contrast to red.
