Hey, welcome to my project. I feel that I need to introduce you to what I'm thinking and how this project/entry will work for me.
I was thinking about the character that I’ll create for a few days, but I couldn't think of anything that was concrete. Well, I know that it will be a female character, but, just thinking about it wasn't working. Instead, I decided to create a background story for her. But I couldn't do that either, because it’s so vague for me to just talk about one person in the entire universe. So I decided to create a whole story and finally create her based on that.
The Earth and humanity -
Well, I based on my favorite sci-fi movies to come up with this story. The movies are: Matrix, Star Wars, Oblivion, Blade Runner and maybe Ghost in the Shell. The Half Life series were a source of inspiration too.
But what happened to Earth? Only a few people live on it, because humanity is now spread throughout the universe and earth was old and polluted. When people were leaving Earth, some corporations bought the resources of it, like water and biological life. They extracted all of it and now the planet is a giant desert (something like Mars). I wanted to make a desert because it gives a feeling of loneliness, and my character will live in complete solitude. Also, I wanted to create something like Star Wars (Luke - Tatooine and Rey - Jakku).
How they extracted the water -
Well, this is an important thing (at least for me), because probably my final image of my character will be next to the water extracting machine. In Half Life 2 you can see that the Combines extracted water based on sea level, but you never get to see how they did it. In the movie Oblivion, you can see the machines flying over the ocean sucking water of it:
These machines are huge, and I really like the design of it, but thinking how it works, it doesn't make any sense. Think about it: just how much energy you would waste just to keep those things flying? And there’s more, how much energy would you waste to break Earth gravity and suck the water inside of it? It's a cool concept, but it's a complete waste of energy. The best solution that I found for this problem is a sinkhole. You would just need to make a huge hole on the ocean and the gravity would do the job. About the transportation, well, let's just use a portal on the bottom of the hole. But, I don’t want to make it that simple, because would just kill the concept, so I’ll design something to put in the holes (some big hardware with big numbers and company names).
The problem of the earth with no water -
Well, when you take out the water of the planet, you will no longer have rain and clouds. This is not the problem, because the character doesn’t actually depend on the rain itself, she can have a huge water storage and the problem’s solved. The problem is with the clouds itself - without them, it would kill some of the design ideas that I had for landscapes or backgrounds, but we can solve it by creating night landscapes, with a lot of stars. But the real problem is the humidity, because without water on the atmosphere, the planet doesn’t have humidity. This would require a breathing mask for our character. I came up with some ideas, like a backpack that provides a pure air bubble around the head of the user. But it’s a weird concept, so I need to work more on this mask.
The character
I'm thinking about if she will be asian. I never drawn any asian character, so it will be a new thing to learn. Her story is pretty simple. Her parents left earth for a couple of weeks, they had to work in other planets/space ships, so it was normal to let her alone. But, they never came back. So she is waiting. Why she didnt leave the planet? Well, she don't have a space ship to do it, and she's not allowed to enter in the human planets and ships because she is not registered to the mainframe. The mainframe is a supercomputer that storage info of all the humans, where they go, what they are doing, etc.. If someone is not on the registry, well, they just "terminate'' it. Then, she needs to wait for them.
Character Concepts
She lives in one of that white observatory. I will do a drawing of it.
She has a bike as a vehicle, it flies, but it can't get high altitudes.
I'm not quite sure about her outfit, i will think of it later.
See you in the next post Thanks. Go Team Sci Fi!
