Nice character design. Love the design of the weapon too, with the big knothole in it. You'll just have to make sure that the weapon and the character don't all run together as they're made of the same material. Good luck and have fun!

I really dig the kid idea (and design). 3 looks the coolest to me, maybe it needs something more around the legs (maybe the fluff mr_dessin mentioned?). The spirit is spot-on!
Rendering looks incredible, and the colors are working really well. I'm also digging his face/mask design. And the weapon too! Just so much about this is awesome!!

My vote goes to something like 3, with the flames/energy just creeping on the blade?
Vote for 3 as well...but maybe try other shapes for the light ?
Although...the (wood) base weapon colour should be more light/different range than the beast also ? (or else it's hard to read your character/weapon).
Looks sweet, coming along nicely. I think 2 works for the blade, Having it stream through the blade doesn't seem like it would do anything, whereas 2 looks like an extension of himself and looks uber powerful.
Number 3 works. Maybe create a more interesting runic pattern and you'll have an awesome runic butcher's knife? lol

I'm digging it, I think the simple design on the weapon is a strong choice, you have a lot of texturing going on in the body, so somewhere for the eyes to rest seems most pleasant.
