Looking forward to posting stuff as soon as possible! This is also my first time entering the Art War challenge.

The goal of entering is not to win but to push myself and learn as much as I can from this challenge. I intend to make the most of it and see what my current limits are. I will try and post concept work at least every two days.

Posting a moodboard to start! I'll be streaming all my work on this project starting today.

Character information/Lore
Initially when designing this character I was going to make a villain because in my experience talking with others and discussing with my partner, it seems there is usually a bit more room for variation/diversity in design/lore with the 'evil' characters. Then I thought it might be intriguing to try and make a hero that falls outside any tropes/stereotypes/norms.

Once I had established I was going to do a hero, I soon knew I wanted to make some sort of centaur, but not using the typical horse body. Even though I don't have any viking or nordic imagery in my moodboard my design ended up feeling very Celtic/Nordic/Viking-ish, so I will be posting a new second moodboard to include imagery from those categories.

Viking Moodboard!

more to be added!

Quick mood sketches. The less developed ones were more experimental to see what I wanted and the two more developed ones are expansions on the idea. Love the pose of the bottom left one but feel like the design of the top right one may be a bit stronger~

Bronwyn! So happy to see you posting!!
Loving this concept so far, agree that the top right design is a little stronger... I'm a big fan of the "push" of that lower right design but it also doesn't seem super practical/quite like what you're aiming for; the top right one incorporates some of that without going too far, I think, which is nice.

Can't wait to see where you take these!

@Bagelhero Thank you Bagel! I'm so glad you mentioned this contest to me, I'm really excited to participate this round. I also really liked the movement in the lower right design, but like you said it just didn't feel as practical/what I was aiming for. It was the first sketch I made which allowed me to further experiment on the tree growing up the back idea which I knew I wanted to keep.

Looking at the previously developed characters I don't see much in the way of the pattern that you used on the shields 7+, introducing that shape into the rest of the character some would help.

As they stand now I rather like 4 and 5, seems to go with the rest of the shape language.

Keep it up, looking fun!

@PeterH Thanks for the feedback! I do see where you're coming from - my next objective is to try each design on the character to see which one works best with the design~

numbered as so:
1 2 3
4 5 6
whew! Took me a while to line this sucker, but I finished some color variations! I'm torn between 1 and 5. I did the large version as a slight variation of 1 with the off white being more bright white, but I'm kind of liking 5 more and more. Which one do you guys like the most?

I'm streaming right now if anyone would like to watch! Working on a commission and then final reference sheet . Would love some feedback/crits~

I'll take down the link once I'm done streaming for the day

Done for today!
