Here is my entry for the Art War 3 Contest

Andrei Jaeger
The Grim Hunter

On the day of Andrei's death he rose to the high heavens to be judged by the Valkyries. Dismissed, he was cast out and dragged to purgatory. Tormented, he was unable to remember his previous life. In desperation he makes a deal with the devil. Harvested souls would be traded for Andrei's story about his past and why he was not accepted into eternal bliss.

Andrei's anti-cross glows when near a person who carries sins. Andrei can take the souls of men who have committed any form of sin. The souls are more precious if they are taken from a person living a fulfilling life.
Souls are siphoned through Andrei's thurible which will be used to spread the ashes in hell with the souls manifested in cinders.
Andrei's weapon is used against angels and men who interferes with his chores.
His book carries the names of the deceased.

Edit: I need to stress that Cubebrush forced my image smaller on upload, I am only seeing this now. Orignial size in my folder is 4000 x 2792 pixels. If any moderator/judge can't take this image as it is due to the compressed size, then let me know so I can edit it or send it to you.

Edit 2: I made the changes as advised by the moderators. Thanks

Began with some thumbnails. I originally wanted to character to be female, something like a succubus but scrapped that early on. I instead chose a male character. I immediately thought of a half man half demon or a man possessed by one. I had fun exploring uncanny designs of the man. He is still a christian, so I thought that his powers could suppressed by his belief, clinging on good.
I also really wanted to explore the mood by playing around with accents around the corners and trying out some ways to present the concepts and sketches

I chose one of the thumbnails I liked. I will do a little more but I really liked the long, heavy and sad body language, as he feels his curse weigh down on him. let me know which ones you like. I am leaning towards number 3

Yep! number 3 is the best one there, gotta agree with you, maybe try making him slump even more, kind of holding himself up with the scythe while standing still. The wing dragging on the ground behind.

Cool fun concept.

Alright!
Here is a big update! I am back from the Christmas holidays and New Years parties, so now I am on the drawing board again. I had so many ideas and problems I encountered regarding design and composition. I couldn't agree with myself but I got some tips from friends. I changed my drawings soon after I thought I had something. Now I am working on an illustration that I feel is solid enough.
I made a few mood sketches and exploratory drawings to get a better understanding of the character and get a feel for the style.
I wanted to start the illustration with a changeable design. That means I didn't have a pre-made design I had to keep, so I could change the way my character looked if I wanted to at any point (which I did a lot). This allows me to create a design which adheres to the composition or strengthens it.
