Hi guys, decided to choose fantasy because I'm awful at scifi and mainly inspired by the work of watercolorist Stephanie Law. I'm going to go for a forest/tree inspired fae/dryad/sylph etc

Not sure whether she'll be all swirly fabric and jewel tones or something a bit darker and more tree inspired but I'll start working on a base to paintover today and see where I end up.

Here's my inspiration sheet of faces and costumes and then the work of Stephanie Law that's my main texture ref.

Yeah this theme seems really interesting. Looks like it'll be quite challenging pulling off this fabric! Are you planning on using cloth simulators?

Hey eidolon, yea there's definitely going to be a tonne of fabric on this so you're totally right about utilising cloth sim. MD will be my go to for the bulk of it if I can get it to fall into a dynamic enough shape.

So I've been attempting to blockout a face that worked for me and tried a bunch of different shapes and styles and these are the most recent.
I kept going back and forth between a prettier looking face and more dramatic styles but
I want to be more influenced by the style of the watercolorist in my ref than aiming for 'pretty'. So even though I really like the second to last iteration and the middle top paintovers I kinda felt I wanted to planar the angles a little and make the line of the nose harsher. I feel the bottom right is a mix of the right style but not too much to be ugly.

I didn't label the iterations as I just wanted to include to show my progress.

And here's the body blockout so far. I want elongated fingers, slim arms and torso but wider hips.

Love this sort of theme! Have you ever heard of Sylvari from Guild Wars 2? They are a plant-based humanoid race that are grown into a human-like shape. I think you might find some cool ideas there to help you incorporate plants into the human form, yet still keeping it pretty. https://www.artstation.com/artist/kristenperry

Ah, Sylvari! I thought I saw a concept of one in Kekai Kotaki's art book but glanced past it with it being armoured. But now that you've reminded me what they're called they are good ref for plant based skin if I decide to go down that route. Looking at that link, they're a lot more leafy and soft looking than I'd realised. Might be cool to make the extremities of her hands and feet like vines/branches as I was considering fabric vambraces at least and that would be a nod to a more ethereal origin. Thanks alemja

Started putting together some loose thumbnails for her dress design. I guess this is the 'elegant' batch but I'm going to turn to more medieval/elven inspired shapes next.
I've suggested wings and a headdress but I'd like to concept them out separately once her basic clothing is decided upon.

Yea I think i is my fave on that page too though I feel it's more angel than forest witch thing. I think no matter which design I choose I'll add details that make it more suitable such as leaves, flowers, twigs etc

Created the pattern for my dress. The skirt will actually need to be modelled manually because when she's posed I want it to twirl around her in a specific way but as a start for the top half there's probably too many wrinkles but it's getting there.
I'll work on adding the tree detailing to her skin next. Still haven't decided whether to keep the horns or not.

So I got behind over the holidays and some family stuff so didn't update. My character changed from the last post and think I need to put together the new ref images I'm working from as inspiration as the original is a bit irrelevant now.

I made a crappy little hand drawn sketch that I'm moving more in the direction of.

She's now totally human but still sticking to the witch theme.

The little purse and the front of the choker are done but the rest is still getting blocked in really. Starting laying in the shape for the hair today before sculpting into it. I want her pose to be as if she's just spun around to face her foe so the skirt is whooshing around her, hair flowing and she'll likely have a cloak that's doing the same. I used nanomesh to quickly lay in some feathers but I'm going to hand place each one by hand instead and make them way chunkier and curved. Her skirt needs further layers to it too.

So I think I'll pose her something like this. Need to get her staff blocked in so she doesn't look so gimpy gripping nothing. Now I'm going to begin sculpting the subtools to the pose
