Hi everyone - second time I participate in the Art war and decided to fight for team lightning

I‘ve always been fascinated by the voodoo religions around the world so I took some inspiration there.

If you are interested in my mood board, you can find it here pinterest

Concept Sheet

Illustration

The following overview is partly research and partly my own interpretation of this character  After I told a friend about her, she called her a „lion mother“ and that describes her personality perfectly so I chose it as her title.

„What I destroy you no longer need.“

Oyá is a Loa in several Voodoo Religions. She is goddess of storms and lightning, a warrior queen but also described as a caring mother and protector of children and women.

Character Name:
Oyá

Occupation:
Goddess of thunder, lightning, tornadoes, winds, rainstorms, hurricanes but also rainbows
Goddess of spirit communication, funerals and cemeteries
Goddess of change and transformation
Goddess of dance
Guardian of the realm between life and death
Warrior-Queen

Visual traits:
Red stones
Copper
Buffalo horns
Rainbows
Lightning
Wind/Tornados/Hurricanes
Machete
Bright-coloured cloth
Tall and lithe
9 copper bracelets
9 different colours

Personality:
Temperamental, Passionate, fearless, sensual, independent, beautiful, courageous
great intensity of feeling, sensations, and charm
Caring and protective (mother)
She has a tendency for dramatic manifestations.

Habits/mannerisms:
wields lightning and rides the winds into battle
Favorite weapons are tornado and machete
raises the armies of the dead as her soldiers
can change from benevolent, caring Mother to destructive Warrior in the blink of an eye

Background:
Oyá has endured much sadness in her life. She is known as the “mother of nine” for she gave birth to nine different stillborn children. She carries much sadness about her incapacity to give birth and she dresses with nine different colored scarves around her waist in memory of her lost children.

Internal conflicts:
Oyá‘s personality ranges from the loving and caring mother over the to the merciless warrior queen. She tends to tantrums not just against her enemies but also the ones she loves. This causes feelings of guilt but she is not able to stop those outbursts.
Besides she is the guardian of cemeteries but summons the deads she’s actually obliged to protect to force her will. She often regrets that afterwards.

External conflicts:
Oyá originally was the goddess of the sea but was tricked by Yemayá who owned the cemeteries. Oyá gave the reign over the sea to Yemayá in exchange for the cemeteries which she just had seen from the outside. Only after the business was done Oyá could enter the inside of the cemeteries and saw what she received. When Oyá realised the treachery it was to late. Since then the two women are bitter enemies.
To wreak vengeance on the „fishwife“ and because she always enjoys a good fight Oyá participates in the war of the elements.

Class: Melee Mage
Oyá uses her machete in close combat as well as lightning strikes from a short distance.

Skills

  • Standard Attack: close combat with her machete, every third strike creates a lightning bolt automatically
  • Standard magic attack: Lightning Strike
  • Dash: Oyá dashes forward, casting lightning in every direction
  • Lightning Wall: protective skill, Oyá‘s calling for many lightning bolts in front of her creating an insurmountable barrier as long as channeled and a short time after finishing, she’s unable to move during channeling
  • Tornado: Oyá starts a wild whirling dance which creates a tornado - nearby enemies are knocked back, enemies further away are attacked by lightning. After a short time the tornado becomes self-perpetuating and cuts a lane through the enemies
  • Ultimate skill: Oyá jumps up catching a lightning and slamming her electrified machete into the ground when landing. The shock wave stuns nearby enemies for a short time and the electricity reanimates every corpse within reach as her undead army who attack everything they find but can be controlled by Oyá
Channeling this ability will attract more lightning and keeps the reanimated bodies alive but Oyá is not able to use any other skill but giving orders

Because the voodoo religion she’s originally part of is African, she had to get that beautiful dark skin. I found out, that the Nilotic people have the darkest skin tone on the world so she will have that, too. Her jewelry needs to be copper - it is part of her legend and also a highly conductive metal which fits her element and will probably be an interesting part for the illustration. White cloth fits her legend, too and it is a great color contrast. It was important to me to give her a modern look.
I like number 4, 10 and 14 most, but 4 has the most interesting Silhouette I guess, so I will go on with that.

Did some sketches and I’m really not sure which one to work out - Any suggestions?

I personally like D for the concept, although composition and gesture wise C is also really nice. Maybe if you combined those ideas? The show of emotion she expresses and that she's protecting vulnerable people really gives it a lot of character and depth moreso than just a cool image imo

Many thanks for your feedback @nesokaiyoh‚ I highly appreciate it! You’re absolutely right - I like the dynamic of C, too but the emotional aspect of D gives much more depth. I also asked some other people and most chose C and D as their favorite. So I did another sketch where I tried to mix both and I‘m satisfied with the rough result - hopefully I am able to finish that scene in time :scream:

Hadn't that much time today, but started giving mass to everything - currently ignoring bounced light, cast shadows, secondary light and (most) of the main light source

let's see how far I'll come tomorrow ^^

Ahh beautiful rendering so far, and those expressions are really good! I'm glad you went for this one in the end, I do have to say her expression in particular is really well done, difficult to work on emotions like that but you nailed it completely! Her pose too, very expressive

many thanks for your kind words @nesokaiyoh  I really love to catch and display emotions - they're giving so much depth to a character. I'm currently writing my master thesis about expression through body language because I'm really fascinated about the whole emotion theme  Just started the research but I'm curious where it will take me in the end.

Anyway I didn't work on the artwork yesterday - sometimes one needs a social live  but I did today and this is how a came so far - will start with the refinementment tomorrow - still a lot to do but every part is at least base rendered and that's a huge step

Wow this is a great drawing! I love your character, gives off a Star Wars vibe, I know this is a WIP but I would say add more lighting bolts/vfx maybe some dust flying at the front to give it more depth

many thanks for your feedback @yazziixx - I'll definitely add more vfx, particles and SPARKLES!!!! But all that vfx stuff is the very last thing I do because I'm getting distracted and it is way to easy to lie to myself and say "yeah I don't have to work this out, it will be hidden behind the special effects" which leads to unclean parts and putting effects where I wouldn't have them placed if I had worked out everything before  Besides it is really annoying to turn those vfx layers off and on again all the time to work on the stuff around it^^
