Very quick initial sketch. Won't be the same standards as other artists here, but oh boi just you guys wait for me to catch up <3
Artwar is a great place to improve! believe it or not, it really, really helps to make a 'quality control' or inspiration board when you're making an illustration- It helped me a lot! Try looking at some story-boards for inspiration 
for the Good Boi, I'd look into what shapes you want to exaggerate,
Is he Big, friendly, and strong? he might have his head up and his chest puffed out
Either way, its good to see new faces here!
Not related to the character design, although I still want to document the work I'm doing to prepare for this challenge. Just bought a tablet a couple of weeks ago, and today's the first time I've had to give it a bash. Think I've figured out a semi-convenient workflow, just need to get more shortcuts mapped and used to what krita can do xo
A mood board would be a good idea! I've also made up a little story in my head, so maybe illustrating that would be good practice and bring the ideas
Also for the good boi, I'm hoping to manage a semi-realistic style, so probably won't emphasize too much, but I guess you're right about the personality playing a part. He's a cute adorable puppy acting dog - until he gets into combat, where he only sees red. Maybe head held high when he's comfortable, while head bowed while threatened or preparing to strike? So much to work out woop
