I'm not sure if I've already told you how fun I found the face of your phoenix but, Hey look amazing xD
There's a really good story telling with the add of the 2 people on the front,
I'd say you could push the render of the mountains a bit further, they look a bit disconnected from the rest of the background. You could also tweak the vegetation on it's back a bit, you could check alpine landscape.
But really cool project
I'd say it's lacking a lot of detail, as it looks a bit unfinished. For what it is though I enjoy the concept and you've done a pretty good job of indicating the scale and mass that this creature represents. The bits of dirt and rocks on the left are a super nice touch as well, as you need some smaller elements to contrast with the bigger ones. I do still feel sorry for the bird lol
Damn, now I begin to feel sorry for that bird myself but this is (Art)war after all, so... sorry team fire
Thanks @Oceane_Roh and @nesokaiyoh for the feedback. I totally agree with you guys. I will try to work on those mountains and details and see how far I can push it, as my time budget is quite low atm
If it helps, I would always recommend using some reference. For instance, aside from just colour and some vague shapes there is actually no detail of the rock looking like rock, maybe experimenting with some textured brushes would help that. Same goes with the grass patches. A good indicator of scale is always trees, and while you do have some small ones right at the top (ngl I didn't notice them until I looked really close for this feedback), it could benefit with many more, perhaps on the side of that arm, shoulder and head.
Heya! Thanks @nesokaiyoh. Yeah, the grass was actually on my list, I just didnt know, how to approach that properly yet. As for the rocks, I will try to experiment a bit. Thanks for the suggestions, I will try those
Baby step update: Worked a bit on those mountains and details
If you don't know how to paint something, look at something that imitates that thing irl! (Yes I'm referring to reference again it's highly valuable lol) Take a look at the Chinese floating mountains for example, knowing how to break down something in real life to use in something imaginary is a very useful tool
@nesokaiyoh Those mountains are gorgeous!!! I tried around a bit with textured brushes and color range selections, but I still dont feel like I can achieve the same quality of texture. But thats ok I guess, lotsof stuff still to learn
Anyway, did some details and structure in the grass as well as several rock-regions.
That's perfectly alright, being able to imitate complex textures with some digitised brushes is really difficult, takes a bit more than just the single brush too. Often when I paint rocks of mountains I'll use a whole range of tools, several chisel style brushes, some soft brushes for colour transition, lasso and shape tools. But either way, you learn through experimenting, so even if it didn't go well I hope you gained something from it!
@nesokaiyoh definetly gave me some perspective on how to approach it, and I'll try more of that in the future, so big thx!
For this project though, I fear there is too little time right now I can put into it, so i will probably keep things simple for now.
tiny update:
Some final adjustments, adding a splash of blue light from the sky here and there and shadows to the trees. Maybe barely noticable, but I lifted the values on his arm a bit to seperate it more from the foreground. Maybe I could do that a bit more but well,... I think this is where I leave it for now.
Thanks @nesokaiyoh when I look back at my struggle colorizing the crude lineart, I am really quite happy with the current state, even if a lot more could be done.
Thanks everyone for the invaluable input and feedback!
