Some first rough sketches. Looked at some stinging jellyfish / electric eels for reference, but trying to keep it feeling like "Lightning". Not sure if I'll stick with or continue with one of these, or do a few more sketches first. Which ones do you think pop so far?

I'd continue exploring but 2 looks most interesting almost xmas tree like even though i know you said reference jelly fish.

Haven't had too much time to work on anything because of the holidays, but I went back and thought about some abilities the character could have since I had NO idea what direction I wanted to go in before.

I sketched out a couple ideas for one of them:

The idea would be that the character beats on the drum (that is filled with static electricity, and sounding similar to thunder), which in turn charges her weapon(s) with electricity.

Other ideas I've been thinking about include a static electric "force field", guns that shoot balls of electricity that'll explode out similar to fireworks, and a lantern (like a bug zapper) that either is the weapon or charges other weapons. Did some extremely rough sketches, mainly just to get the idea down:

I'll explore those more in the thumbnail stage, and if they make it past that point I'll decide if I need to do character sketches before the final!

Time to move onto thumbnailing!

14 days later

Was busy with the holidays and getting back into the swing of work, but here's my faves of the thumbnails I've been working on! I think I'd have fun continuing with any of them, so it might be a hard decision  Gotta pick one soon though, if I'm going to finish on time. :muscle: Which ones draw your eye?

I like that you seems to go with the drum idea, it's my favourite, really original take, for you thumbs : I'd guess the 3 or the 2, could depend of the personality of your character and what you want to communicate ?

Ah yes that's true, thank you! I should consider the character's personality. I think I'm going for something more brash or aloof, which leads me more towards the bottom 3

Oh you made me learn two more words :'D
I'll be looking further to see what you'll do

This is really cool! I like where this is going already! Can't wait to see more!

This is interesting!
But I must say I like the jellyfish idea from the first round of sketches - the one with the hat and lightining-tectacles hanging from it. Seems like a cool visual cue for the nature of the character.

Thank you guys!
Unfortunately I don't have time to go back and do more character sketches at this point, but I'm thinking maybe now after this over I might go back and flesh that idea out more for some extra practice! :grinning:

Update time! So I decided to go with #5... if only because I feel like it'll challenge me the most both in terms of anatomy and rendering.

Here's a more refined sketch... still have some anatomy (and ooh boy - hands ) to fix before slapping some values or color on :+1:

Really great work!!
The only thing is I'm afraid it hides most part of the really cool design you created! o:

Cool and dynamic composition! But I agree, that it kind of hides some interesting parts of the character design. Maybe try to turn the character's torso a bit to show at least the drum better?

You're right!! It does block her design a bit... like her main thing haha  So I took @arhityom 's advice and tried moving the torso and arm over a bit to show more of the drum. Also slapped some value on; still ignoring the hands though (for now). Will probably do some quick color passes next so I have a plan!

Nice colour schemes !
Hard to choose...

I just have one little concern; it's hard to understand it's her who summon the thunder (or maybe I just don't get it).
Or you will add lightning to the blade ?

(and I know it is really late to say but, sketch number 4 was looking great and more dynamic maybe).

Nice colours. I surely would go with the 2, the overall ambiance is more dramatic, the blueish tones on the others give a more soft ambiance
