I initially decided to for the Earth element and had an image in my head of a stone monk in a majestic pose but as I am a 3D artist this was quite hard for me to conceptualise. So I decided to go with a more refined and thought out approach to my character. I decided I wanted to work with water, and that I wanted my character to be anthropomorphic, I wrote down a list of words I attributed to water and I eventually came up with this idea for an otter character, a swordsman, more specifically a duelist, and with the power of water he fought his enemies! so I tried and failed to create a concept so I jumped straight into modelling since its easier for me to block out general ideas that way.
