Here's my reference board for the time being. It has paintings based on folklore as well as some traditional clothing and instruments and other notable things about the country like northern lights.
Character design progression. It's not final yet but I like where it is going.

Go for it! I think sprinkling some history and mythology always adds more depth to the character even if other may not know the reference.

Here are some early silhouette explorations. 
It's amazing with the spirit behind! Also, maybe it's stupid idea, but I think that you can make that birch bundle for sauna much more prominent! This is hilarious as a weapon
