Fixed the pose some more and cleaned up the lines. (Spiderman turned out to be a really good pose reference... :P)

Now I am trying to lay down the AO layer. Normally, I jump right ahead into color, but I've been struggling a lot with values and lighting. SO, step by step it is. I still have to do her hair, pants, boots, and lightsaber.

Any tips on rendering ambient occlusion? As always, C&C appreciated.

Hey guys! I had to take a break from Rey to finish up comic homework. Now that it's done, I can finally get back to painting  In the meantime, here's how the pages turned out.

Critique is welcome, but I will say beforehand that the class assignment was a four-page short story--and I ended up opting for the prologue of a much longer story instead. So if it seems like a lot is left unanswered, that's why. I was toying with the idea of taking it through to completion, but we'll see.

Anyway, here's the cover and the story!

Can you believe it? I actually finished the mermaid! :open_mouth: Normally, something like this takes me a few days--so it was super strange to work on tiny pieces of it over the last five months. At least I finished in time for MerMay!

That water was TOUGH.... Glad it's done now!

Wow! Your art is amazing!!! I'm getting a classic fantasy book cover vibe from your illustrations and I love how you've rendered the panels for your comic example, it's fantastic. You've got some serious skills, keep up the good work! :grinning: :sparkles:

The comic looks cool. I really like the decoration some of the panels have. But now I want to know what happens next!

Also I loooove how the mermaid turned out! I find the way the light shines on the side of her face especially gorgeous. Awesome work!

@Stefanie_Drawinger Thank you so much  I saw your retro sci-fi piece in the art critique section--really cool stuff. Looking forward to seeing what else you create!

@cedricgo Haha, thanks! I'm hoping to continue the comic in my spare time. There's a lot more to that story. Also, glad you like the mermaid! I'm pretty happy with how she turned out...even though she crashed my computer twice.

Hello! Wow I love your artwork, you are pretty advanced when it comes to rendering and human anatomy. Your detail is also lovely, especially in the clothing and scales here. I am prone to paint pretty girls myself, they are hard to escape!

I hope you don't mind some feedback, or rather just an observation. There is a certain quality about your faces, it's hard to put a finger on. It might be proportion, or perhaps the rendering, but you have a similar look as my own girls... not quite realistic yet. I think you are more advanced than I am though, for sure.

That being said, I would love to try and improve on faces, and attempt to find that elusive key to truly realistic people. Is it lighting? Proportion? Color? Are you working on this mystery right now perhaps?

@poppypaizs Thanks for stopping by my blog! Yes, I am still trying to figure out the key to photo-real faces. I'm guessing my anatomy is still off. (I have a terrible time with 3/4 view especially.) Rey is probably the closest to "real" I have gotten yet, but I'm still not very pleased with how she turned out. Good practice, though.

That's probably the key to realism anyway...practice, practice, practice! And lots of good reference

Not a lot of time lately for personal art, especially the realistic kind! But here are the things I did over the last week or so:

And this is a commissioned drawing of a Star Wars RPG character I finished for a follower on Instagram. She's a Mandolorian bounty hunter like Boba Fett...but much prettier

Kinda random, but here's a thing I did for an alternate history space-suit challenge! I tried to make it look like a Renaissance painting. (It was harder than I thought.)

He's Sir Vasco Cabrillo de Luna, first Spanish explorer to the moon.
