One thing that I could say to you is to divide the drawing process in steps.
I usually do the basic color and then with a big brush I do general shadows and highlights of the entire volume, than I do smaller and smaller details always with shadows and lights.
After that I redo a general shading over the folds to make them less, aggressive if I could say hahah it really changes the final result.
Sometimes at the final stage I also color pick the color of the folds in the photo and seeing if it maches with the values of my drawing.
Another thing that could help is to looking for the darkest and brightest colors in the reference before starting and then play in this range of values.
It's not so much to say but I hope that it could help you in some ways!!
