Took a bit of a break during the holidays but I'm back to the grind now. Spent most of my day working on the 4p perspective character studies and its a bit tricky but I think I got them mostly correct. I was going to add the bikini top onto the middle one but it looked weird because it wasn't affecting her boobs at all so I just copied it over and changed it a bit.

Now I just need to figure out how to translate this into an actual character drawing instead of a static standing pose.

I'm trying to apply some 4p to an actual character drawing. I'm not certain it's working but i'll keep working on it. I need to change the angle of the sword in her right hand because it looks really unnatural as it is now. I think I might just redo her right arm altogether. I think her torso might also be a bit too long? Not sure... I'll fiddle with it more tomorrow and see if I can get it to look right.

I decided that trying to force a weird perspective on the picture was making it look stupid and bad so I kinda just did away with that altogether... I also fixed a couple anatomy problems like her torso being way too long and having her twist a bit less so it looks more natural and closer to the reference image.

Man, you have some natural talent for these animation stuff, you should definitely do more if you enjoy it, they are great!

@Frygidal thanks! I've been having a lot of fun with learning how to animate. I've actually got one in the works right now and ideas for at least one more whenever I finish it.

In other news I've improved the lines and added some flat colour to my drawing from yesterday.

Reworked my drawing with some of Marc's feedback and I think he was definitely right about not seeing her back leg. I added a couple more details and things and I think I'll start adding shading tomorrow.

daily progress: I started rendering today and I think it's looking pretty good. I still have no clue what I'm doing with hair and the fur on the boots gave me a lot of trouble... On the bright side I'm very happy with how the gold pieces have turned out I think they are reading pretty well as metallic objects. I'm really not looking forward to rendering her tail...

Looking great! Maybe the highlights used for the metal (bells, swords) should be a little bit more prominent vs. the highlights used for the hair? To make sure the different materials are easier to detect?
But I am no pro at all, just my piece of mind

This is turning out great @hyoi. Congrats. And indeed good luck with that tail 😅

I'm just wondering if, for some of the ambient occlusion shadings there, if they shouldn't be a bit darker? I'm wondering about the values and contrast there (especially the area behind her body - hair and tail) and things there seem to be blending together almost.

Does it make sense?

Looking forward to a final render on the swords as well! 👍

I wasn't really happy with the way I had done the hair so I re-did it to try and distinguish it a bit from the metal. I'm not sure it necessarily reads specifically as hair but I think it looks better now than it did before. I also toned down the highlights on the fur so it doesn't stand out so much. As for the details all getting lost together I added some backlighting(?) on her hair so that you don't end up losing the arm and the tail so much. Not necessarily realistic but I think it helps the piece read a bit better so I'm okay with that.

Besides all that I added some lighting effects, adjusted the curves ever so slightly, and added an almost transparent gradient map to bring a bit more warmth into the piece.

Good improvement - I saw Marc's feedback on stream and I agree that the tail placement is much better now, the pose is grounded and more dynamic now!

Are you going to do something about the face? The reference is so fierce and I find the face to be the weakest part of this drawing currently. Even if you go for an anime or stylized result, I do think there needs to be a bit more attention paid to the planes of the face, anatomy, and rendering.

Finally, make sure you flip your canvas once in a while - I'm sure you'll notice a few extra things! Do you mind if I do a lil' redline overpaint of things I spotted?

Hi Vonschlippe, thanks for the critique! I would very much appreciate an overpaint if you are willing to do one, always looking for ways to improve.

I think you are probably right about the face, after looking at it again it does seem rather flat. I'll spend a little more time on it and see if I can fix it a bit.

Alright here's my quick nitpicking session. It's crude so don't look to take it exactly as is, but it's to give an idea of things that might need work.

Assuming the light is coming from the top left, there are a few inconsistent light/shadow patterns, notably on the raised thigh and the side-boob (which needs a shadow!).

The crotch is a bit anatomically incorrect, so I brought it more in-line with your reference image. I added a face - it's based off reference which you might not like, and it's just a suggestion, but I would definitely rework it and concentrate the details there. After all, it's where our eye naturally drifts to when viewing a piece - character's faces!

Ok so here's my final(???) edit. I tried to fix everything vonschlippe pointed out but I didn't quite go as far into realism on the face because I still wanted it to look a little bit anime. I also wanted to avoid giving her a super serious look like what was in the reference because I don't think it really fits her personality. Anyway I think the face looks a lot better now than it did before and that's what counts. The other thing that I forgot to do before now was colour my lines so I did that.

Final final edit on my yuel picture after feedback from Marc. Slimmed her face down a bit and added a few more highlights to her nose/cheek/upper lip. I darkened the background and removed the rectangle thing and also added a bit more highlights to certain parts of the silhouette to try to try and keep it from blending in.

Really happy with how this turned out overall considering how much time I spent on it.

Started working on the next anatomy class today. Did a couple exercises drawing muscles over top of photos and also over the skeleton. The back muscles(paricularly everything attached to the scapula) were really giving me issues, so I had to look up a couple other references/videos before it started to make sense. Going through and actually drawing each muscle individually and knowing where it attaches does help to make sense of things a bit.

Drawing torsos today. Didn't quite finish this sheet but I'll do that tomorrow with the set of male torsos I prepared on another layer. They aren't exact copies but i think they are at least believable as far as the anatomy goes aside from the missing limbs.
