@jasminerosepowell Thanks!!! Glad it seems to flow well even for mobile. That was a big feedback point for the last chapter I wasn't able to adjust as easily (since composition was hard to change), but I can try to improve for this one since it's still early in production. Yes, you're right about having to be discreete with speech bubles, text and art. It's a balance I'm still struggling to get used to, but I'll try to keep this in mind for this chapter. I'm already adjusting a few frames to try to ease up on the composition and balance. Wish there was a straight forward way to do it, but it seems it's mostly about practice and trying to see what works. Let me know if you see any specific points to adjust as we work through these pages!
Busy with work and other follow ups, like the car at the garage, they're taking forever.
Still, got some time to do some arts
Term 4
Another muscles over skeleton exercice. I’m trying to be extra careful with these since we’re so close to the end of the term. Want to make sure I make good on these exercices. Asking for feedback in discord, checking references, etc. As usual, also trying to practice rendering.
Saw this funny pose that reminded me of Freddie Mercury. So why not spice it up a bit?
If you notice any areas of improvement, let me know!
Manga
Finally starting to kick of production for chapter 32 after taking a few detours.
First the character’s reference sheet. Unlike the design sheets, this are mostly references for myself to keep track of values to use, overall mood and lighting, and the actual design characters will use during the chapter, since they tend to change outfits, apparel or so on.
And completed page 1!
1) Seki is able to easily notice “Shadow”s presence, while in other instances, he has not been able to do so as easily. Unlike Dragon ball or other shonen stories where users “detect ki”, that’s not such the case here. It’s mostly about focus, attention, ambience and other factors. It’s how a person who is meditating can easily hear if someone walks in versus someone distracted by a TV show might not even notice when someone slams the door.
2) Another lore detail that is not explained until much later. Seki heals very quickly. Not like Wolverine, but still faster than normal. Mostly due to the “treatment” he was subjected to by his master. That and he also knows fine acupuncture he uses on himself, in combination with his control over his ki.
3) Still trying to push bleed and edge as much as possible, with basically no edge on this one. There is a limit for the main focus, but went all the way to the edge.
4) Overall ambience is to be dark for this chapter since its nighttime, but still trying to keep details and values on check to make sure it’s readable on screens and mobiles. I think it worked out well but feedback is welcomed to see if we should do further adjustments. I think I’m starting to get comfortable with a balance of backgrounds, brush assists, texture use, and retouch for readability. There’s a bit of all of them here.
5) There’s a bit of symbolism on the middle frame, with “shadow” stalking through... well... the shadows, and Seki standing straight on the side of “light”, with a “barrier” in between them.
To elaborate on “Ki”, an extract from my notes for the lore:
Technology and Skills
Ki - The use of ki by humans and humanoids is limited by their own physical prowess. Just like people normally have a "reserve of energy" to perform physical activities, Ki basically is the ability to harness these "energy reserves" to temporarily enhance their physical abilities.
Similar to how people can perform seemingly superhuman feats when under great stress, ignoring the pain that goes along with overextending muscle strain.
This means that any physical activity can be "boosted", such as enhanced strength, enhanced speed (since speed is really just muscles pushing in bursts), or even enhanced healing. Correspondingly, this places great strain on the body of the user. In simple terms, the use of Ki can be viewed as a momentary and controlled gain of physical prowess (or body functions).
Mastery over Ki implies a mastery of the body in skill and mind. Skilled athletes are not only stronger and have more stamina, but are usually more efficient and graceful with their movements, using less energy to perform activities that less experienced people would waste more energy on. In the same way, masters of Ki can harness their “energy reserves” and “boost” skillfully and at specific times to perform feats that more inexperienced users would use vast reserves of energy to perform.
Some examples of "Ki boosting" in past chapters:
There are a few more but I think the point is clear
That's all for now, thanks for stopping by! Have a great weekend! Cheers!
