Angels are units in an army created by the artisans of the Dia'e kingdom; made of porcelain that can't be penetrated, their sole purpose is to defend the kingdom against constant raids fromcreatures lurking in the surrounding shadows.

In one battle where the shadows got so close to the capital, the unexpected happened, darkness succeeded and got into one of the angels, infecting her body and causing her to become self aware for moments before she was going to turn completely dark, in those brief moments, she , for the first time had to make a choice, she chose to harvest that dark infecting her, use it to her advantage and make her unprecedented last stand count.

The creators now hold their creation in such high regard that her body is displayed in the capital, visited all day long and given thanks to by souls she saved.

Hey everyone ^^

This is my 1st participation here, the theme sounded pretty cool and inviting ! so let's have fun ^^

So my initial idea is a character that would use be on the light side but uses dark in some way against..well ..darkness .

So started with some silhouettes using symmetry tool on photoshop ( i just looove that !)

I've done some more stuff that i'll prepare and share later ^^

Nice designs so far! I especially like the one in the top right: The contrast between both the shapes and values of the light rounded feathers and the dark creepy arms is really compelling. Good luck whichever you choose, and have fun!

I've done some more of these just for the sake of shape exploration , a bit mindless in case any of them sparks some idea , already the 1st one on the left on the previous image sparked a backstory in my head so right now i'm exploring that one more .

So i went with the 1st thumb in the 1st image again since i already have some narrative going for it !
i'll try to explain the general idea and give more details as i finalize them

So basically it's a golem fueled by magic made for fighting against darkness but ends up infected by it during a battle so, before she's completely consumed by darkness she got this overwhelming flow of both dark and light power, with it she achieves self awareness and decides to use that mix of power for a final stand against dark .

Now the risk of the idea is the fact that it might not be clear whether she's light or dark so i'm gonna design both before and after infection versions , and for the illustration i'm thinking making it have this statue in action feel to it so taking reference from some porcelain figurines .

Looking for some more reference for older figurines , with cracks and all ..

And some more pose exploration for the final !^^ not going in order but just wanna get a feel of what i'm gonna do than i'll go back and refine all.

Oooh I just love this stuff. Love that you drew inspiration from these porcelain statures, I think it will bring your character some fragility

yeah exactly , i thought porcelain would go nicely with light and adds the fragility feel to it .. also I was imagining the makers of these dolls and how they take pride in making these fighting tools beautiful! something i'm thinking of more ^^

ok and now here i wanted to roll back a bit and see how the character looked like before she got infected with darkness, also wanted to reduce the percentage of darkness on her design, so we still can tell she's on the light side !^^

Now some compositions for the illustration^^ they all revolve around two ideas which are :
1- Being in her last stand on the light side before she turns to darkness , in the battlefield .
2- After the war and her last stand , people made a statue out of her body, and i was thinking maybe to depict that statue ^^ would love to hear your thoughts ^^

the story is not super clear but still refining the edges ^^ but hope it makes a bit of sense so far .

I narrowed it down to these two compositions, still a little torn between both though ,

Depicting the actual moment, the turning point and end of of her story in the battlefield... or the idea of showing her glory through the fact that her final stand deserved a statue and admiration of her creators..

The wide one! The statue is interesting, but if she is made out of procelain it's less relevant to have her lifeless. Her bow is way to appealing to be cropped.

Compositionally, I think the portrait one is more suited to a contest where the goal is to show off a single character. In the landscape one, she is overshadowed by the environment. It's a great illustration layout, but less so for an illustration that focuses on a character design. That being said, though, I'd only go with the portrait one if it were actually her in action, not statue of her. I agree with @innocent that it's not a great choice to have her lifeless.

Also, probably too late to note this, but I was disappointed to see that you moved away from having the top off her head glowing. The version with the white body and glowing head and arrow that you posted seemed very clear that she was a warrior on the side of light. Now the big glowing spear says "Light" but her head and bow say "Darkness." I have no idea which side she's supposed to be on, but the challenge is about making a clear distinction that a warrior is on one side or the other.
