I had a design for both light and darkness, but I opted for this one since I could play more with shapes.

This character is supposed to be an ancient monk that ended up leaving the physical world behind for "Enlightenment". When he felt something dark creeping in, he knew he had to come back on earth to defend everything that's "good". Not able to recover a physical body, his spirit form covered itself in fabrics and objects like masks to be able to communicate with the living. Him and all the citizens who once knew him when he was still living shall stand up for what they cherish most and defeat the dark threat.

Some bad pictures of sketches I did away from home today. I was trying to play with the different silhouettes ideas to see what kind of interesting composition I could get.

These aren't bad at all! It looks like you've got it figured out. The view looking up at it levitating is especially fetching. The design reminds me of a Peter Chung, Aeon Flux/Reign The Conqueror vibe. I'm interested to see how you incorporate either the light or dark motif. Is this inspired by the Tibetan Buddhist mummies?

@frankcauthen Thanks a lot! I'm actually working on detailing this exact sketch atm.
And yes, it's strongly inspired by the Tibetan monks! It's fascinating to see how dedicated they are and I wanted to add a "what if" twist to it.

It is indeed in there. I don't know if you can see the little "flame" around the torso area from the sketches, but this is representing his soul. I imagine this to be the source of this character's power.

Some more work was put into this tonight to start cleaning the sketch I chose. Hopefully it ends up looking good.

The sketches are nice! Its good to see different mediums in use. I find it helps generate more ideas.

I worked the design a bit more tonight. For the "hat" part, I thought I would opt for something more similar to what Lamas/Buddhist religious leaders seem to wear during important ceremonies. I saw the Dalai Lama wear something similar (picture included below) and I really liked the shape.

After some research I learned that it was a style of hats (Pandita Hat) that only monks at a highest level of experience/education wear. Which is fitting for the kind of character(s) that I'm going for.

Then I modified the Pandita Hat to my liking:

Nice design! I like the multiple faces and how you've drawn the masks in the last post. The new hat direction sounds good too. Looking forward to seeing more. Good luck and have fun!

This time I have put effort into the shoulder pads. I thought they could be decorated by common villagers upon seeing this kind of "deity". I also came up with some backstory for this character. I'll try to make a nice "tldr" text to accompany the last submissions.

For the finished product, I am starting to imagine this character surrounded by monks, warriors and villagers marching against the "darkness", ready to fight.

Here's tonight's update! While testing colors, I came up with jade as an interesting material for the mask and legs "armor". A friend made me notice how the "oni" mask may look a bit evil (my goal was to convey anger) so I think I should find something to replace the horns, or simply remove them. I tried to compensate with the pastel colors and light, but I'm not sure if this is working well.

What are your take on this? I'm interested to know.

Note to self: Once I start to paint details, I should try to avoid stiffness.

Fixed a few things since last time according to critiques and rendered a few others. Once I'm done with the Monk, I'll work on the soldiers at the front.
