Gibson - Art School Journey - Term 1

Here is my fun sketch for the day.

The shading under the neck isn't the right shade I wanted... I couldn't figure it out, but with time I'm sure I will learn when I get to that point in the course. It took me aquite a few hours and I have a stiff neck lol so bed time for me. Was a good day overall for art.

Day 2: New Schedule 3/12/23
Assignments
Daily Visual Communication 5 Minutes: I Studied Hands, because they are still super hard for me.

Daily Pen Control:

Daily Image Adjustments: Today I had some troubles with image 2 and 4 again. The issue is I pretty much have no idea what changes what or what I need to change. I re-watched the video to maybe get more of an understanding, but that didn't work much. I get the Hue adjustments and the color balance. I don't get the Curves and Levels.

Well back to more studies.

3-13-23
Had to bring my dog to the vet so didn't get in the color assignments in yet, I will make time after dinner, I did do some proportion sketching because that is the thing that is blocking me right now so I'm just going to keep doing this till I don't need the reference. Not sure if that's the correct way to do it but seems like a plan.
Of course I will continue doing the assignments.

Drew another before bed because I just want to draw figures so much.

3-14-23
Week 1 - Day 3
Classwork for the day.

Observation 5 minutes --> Turned into a small study.
Foot construction. My goodness it's hard to find foot references in different angles that aren't drawn, that are just real feet. I even tried "feet pics" lol to get anything haha! Ended up with these.

Turned into a small study and sketched this out.

Pen Control
My lines are looking a bit better, for some reason today was a bit faster and seemed easier to do.

Image adjustments
Did pretty well with this today, image 2 and 4 were not so hard, not perfect.. but that is where I think I got rid of some of the stress I was having with it and just said, "I can't be perfect" and just did the best I could with it and called it done.
I can see myself in the future trying a project and never finishing it because I'm too much of a perfectionist. I need to relax on that and hopefully art will help me with that.

Thanks so much! I haven't touched drawing in 25+ years and starting up a passion that I've had for so long just gives me that drive to push forward and keep doing what I've always wanted to do.

Well bed time for me and here are some after dinner sketches of some Poses to just try to draw figures at different angles.

Week 1 - Day 4
Classwork for the Day

Observation: 5 Minutes: I did the foot again

Pen Control: Lines were messed up a bit today think I was going too fast.

Image Adjustments: 4th Picture gave me issues again lol. The funny thing is I can see what the photo needs as far as color or brightness/darkness/contrast but I can't get the right balance with the tools. I did figure out how to move around the Levels to get them to spread out all across the graph though.

Ill post later if I sketch anything more tonight

Week 1 - Day 4
Classwork for the Day

Observation - Looked at a reference for 5 minutes, then sketched and lined it, added flats but not going to shade because I still just not there yet. Please let me know if there is anything weird with it.

Pen Control: Lines and Lines and More lines... oh, and some circles

Image Adjustments: Same same,... 2 and 4 are a pain. lol

Week 1 - Day 5
Classwork for the Day

Didn't do any sketching today, just wasn't feeling it. Maybe I will try a little later. It's like I want to draw but, don't know what to draw because I'm so limited in what I can draw. Maybe I'll study feet more or hands.

Pen Control: I slowed down a bit and my lines were pretty good, at least I think.

Image Adjustment: Finguring out the Levels and Curves a bit more but still having trouble with it.

Might edit later with some Observation.

Week 1 - Day 6
Classwork for the Day

Observation: Hands, Took my time with this to really observe and try to get the proportions correct.

Pen Control: Slowing down when doing the lines helps me a lot. I know we are supposed to do it faster with time, maybe I will be able too but I'm getting old so ya, my hand isn't so steady as it used to be.

Image Adjustments: Almost a full week of this and I'm fed up with picture 4 lol. Bahhh!

Week 1 - Day 7
Classwork for the Day

Observation: I think I need to not try to do such hard things and just stick to basics for now. I keep seeing what I want to draw and skipping how to get to that point. Bad habit.

Pen Control: Went a bit faster today as you can see, it's a bit more shaky.

Image Adjustments: SO LONG #4!! LoL, end of the week in the schedule

Nice job on these, I totally feel you on the drawing beyond what is asked feels - in hindsight it’s probably best to focus on basics first for sure. But experimenting with things like shading and drawing things for fun I feel is also important

Remember when drawing, you don’t have to draw 1:1 what is being referenced, rather your interpretation and to that end it helps immensely to get good structure using simple 3D shapes based on the proportions of the object being drawn

Thanks for that tip. I always seem to draw so much bigger than what I'm seeing and then everything gets messed up because I think I'm supposed to draw the exact size of what I'm seeing, but it's not the size of the drawing but the proportions of the drawing itself.

Week 2 - Day 1
Classwork for the Day

Just want to say I didn't do the Apples and image editing thing because I'm not trying to do that sort of thing. It's cool to know how to do it and I did learn how to do it but I think for what I'm wanting to achieve with my goal, my time would be better doing other studies.

Pen Control

Line of Action: I'm pretty confident on these lessons. Don't know if I really need to do them for 7 days. Might replace with something else basic like just some freehand construction.

Construction: Same as with the Line of Action, Pretty confident on how everything is put together and what goes where and the perspective of it. I need to work on doing this without tracing it over the models. I might just replace these 2 assignments with that.

Cylinder Sketching: Now this I need to work on. So this I will continue to do. So removing the other Assignments and replacing with the freehand construction and then the cylinders it will give me more time to do them. Setting up the images for Line of action and then construction then tracing them all took quite some time and I think I will learn more from doing the freehand now and will have more time to work on that.

Week 2 - Day 2
Classwork for the Day

Pen Control: Man some days I'm good and others just shaky lol.

Construction: I think I'm just drawing too small. Going to try really big tomorrow to see what happens.

Cylinders: Getting better but finding hard to draw them in different ways. Guess that is just a lack of reference in my art library (my head) lol. I looked up some references and there aren't very many. I'll just have to make some things up.

Week 2 - Day 3
Classwork for the Day

Pen Control: I sure hope I get better at this over time lol. Doing it more doesn't seem to correlate with getting better at it.

Construction: Did bigger models today, seemed to help more and easier to draw overall.

Cylinders: Not too many cylinders here lol, more of just random sketching, Painted an eyeball for what reason I have no clue haha!

Edit: Felt like I didn't do my work Correctly with the cylinders so I re-did it .
