  • Thank you! I finally cleaned that up. Meanwhile started 3 more ..I have a habit of taking too long to finish a piece, then I lose interest in it and just start something else. I found 8 from recently i started and abandoned, that are decent enough to not delete, but not finished. There’s also been a number of drawings I felt I “outgrew” - became better before I finished them, and it would be easier to start from scratch than fix them. Anyone else thinking that?
  • Lady Death Fanart Collectible: Part 6 Polypaint and base Hi, it’s time to share with you another part of the process to create this fanart piece. Polypaint As this is my first collectible fanart I didn’t have previous experience with polypaint so I tried my best and played a bit with it.I wanted to give a ghostly and eerie look to Lady Death, she is beautiful and deadly, but at the end of the day she is a woman that died and was reborn at hell as an avenging spirit, that’s why I gave her skin tone a bluish very cold tone.As you will see I gave myself some creative freedom to deviate from the traditional color scheme that this characater has in comics and illustrations. To add a bit of sensuality by painting some freckles on the face and the chest. The dark nature of this character was the perfect excuse to gave her a kind of goth make up, very dark shadows around the eyes, blue lips and fingernails. I know that the original character includes sexy red lips but I wanted this girl to have a sexy but at the same time creepy look, that’s why we can see some thin veins emanating from her eyes. The biggest chromatic change I did for this character is at the hair. Lady Death has a characteristic white weavy hair but in my fanart I decided to gave her a very saturated blue color. The reason behind this wasn’t only an aesthetic choice. I want that the face area strongly pulls the attention of the viewer so this area needed a stronger contrast. Another reason is that I want her to have a more modern look, as I mentioned before, I’m strongly attracted to women with goth/punk look. I gave myself half an hour or more to analyse the work of experienced sculptors that create collectibles and I discovered that the use of darker values on the skin is often applied to create a greater sense of volume and three-dimensionality. I found that areas with heavy ambient occlusion are the perfect places to paint with darker colors in order to increase the separation between different forms. Even though she has a bluish skin tone, I used a bit of warmer hues in areas that, in real life, tend to go towards red and pink, this is very obvious in the nose, cheeks, and knuckles. Thinking with a logical mind it’s completely absurd to have warmer tones on the body of a zombie like creature but I didn’t want to limit myself by using only blue tones, it looks boring and artificial. In real life these colors are created by blood vessels in areas where the skin is very thin. ** Scythe **for her weapon I applied a cool gray with some warmer variations, this color scheme is influenced by the work of H.R giger. Base I’d like to talk about the design for the base which, to be honest, I forgot to develop along with the character. My main idea with the base is to show that Lady Death inhabits a very sterile and arid land, at the end of the day she is at hell. You can see a that she walks over dirt and rocks, a sign that she’s surrounded by death and loneliness. As part of the landscape we can see some bones and skulls to reinforce the idea of lack of living creatures, yet we can see three hands that try to reach her legs. This hands represent that all creatures are subordinated to her power and seek an evil blessing with a simple touch of the princess of the damned.1- The hand with skin burns represents the souls of those who are newcomers to hell, tortured souls that suffer for the sins comitted on earth.2- The hand with greenish rotten skin and pustules is the reminder of the decay that has infected the souls of those who have been trapped and have forgotten their humanity3- Last but not least, the hand of a demon shows that even dark creatures and entities bow before her presence. The cherry on the top, at least in my vision, are the simese twins that emerge from the ground, this malevolent creatures remind us that in hell there’s only perversion and any trace of innocence is lost. Thanks for reading till this pointI’m really happy to be very close to finish this creative journey, last but not least it’s mandatory to talk about splitting the sculpture in several pieces to be printed, this will be my last entry before showing the final rendered images. See yaMay Zbrush be with you

At first I thought of him as a bear but I named him Fenrir and I think wolf suits him better. Eye gave me a bit of hard time but I think it is fine now. I focused on face and forgot about area below. The way I draw hair clashes with greying hair. I had the same problem while doing Lohse's white hair. Does it looks like it is greying here? I love how desaturated red looks blue there. I keep lying to myself that I will use different color scheme but It all comes down to this blue and yellowish one it is just flipped this time Have a great day!

Sprint Retrospective #1 of 2024 - (1/1/24 - 14/1/24)

What a nice way to start this sprint on a Monday!

To make this more enjoyable, at the end of each goal/progress, I put a GIF of my overall feeling rather than me explaining for 5 minutes why I feel justified to be upset.

Past Sprint's Goal & Other Work

Anatomy II

I have seen the lecture video but haven't practice to it as I was more interested with clothes drapery. However, I have seen in the next term, Term 4 has explores into anatomy of the Upper and Lower. So, perhaps, just a brief understanding might suffice for the time being.

But I still need to do the homework provided at the end of video.

TD (Total Drama) Work

I have done another TD x Sport art comm - starring Courtney as Raiders Cheerleader

What made this comm unique is I livestream this comm process with the commissioner himself so he ask a lot of question or comments about work in real time - thus putting real pressure to showcase myself as an artist but in a good.

In other news, I have 2 new TD art comms with price:

  1. 2 chars in a GIF comic style - $50 USD
  2. 2 chars with background - $25 USD

So far so good.

NOTE #1 - Yes, I may have said that I will never do art comm again. But personal money to buy my stuff without my mum invovlement.... it's worth it.

NOTE #2 - Yes, I have known that there are 2 new TD seasons with new contestants. However, not really that interested to watch it compared to previous seasons. Just watching it to get more references lmao.

Artist Study

Unfortunately, like my anatomy study, haven't had the time to study a particular cartoon artist on Twitter or X. Next sprint, I should be able to solely focus on my cartoon improvement via artist study.

Outside Work

At the first weekend of this year, my family and another family went to Dubbo to visit Taronga Zoo. Now, there are 2 Taronga Zoo in NSW and the one we are going to is more exotic.

Initially went to zoo to relax and chat with my family friend on his passion of animal, I had a bit of Aaron Blaise inspiration and decide to do some sketch on the animals I found interested.

As you can see, I was more interested in animal leg - maybe because I'm more intrigued by the structure.

But yeah, it was fun to not draw people for the time being.

Drapery

Dunno know but I got more into drapery studies. Most likely because it's more relevant to my cartoon work/improvement than anatomy. Even though cartoon simplifies the fold to be easy to understand, I feel the need to do a comprehensive study on each fold.

A particular video I watch is Bucci one - highly recommended.

I made some notes and paid particular focus on diaper fold.

Fair to say, I'm planning to spend more time in drapery, more in cartoon than realism.

TD Doodles

Decide to bring back one of my old habit from last year which is random doodles based on a particular theme. I think it's nice because it emphasise more on experimentation and allow me to commit mistake and learn from it.

So the past 2 weeks theme were cheerleader and exercise.

Book Review - Art and Fear

From a charity store, I bought a book called Art and Fear. While it was cheap, it got me hooked as it explains artist fear of doing art working and why so many people quit art making.

I wouldn't really recommend buying and reading it as it's a bit too boring but nevertheless it has some key points.

https://www.amazon.com.au/Art-Fear-David-Bayles/dp/0961454733

  • Becoming an artist means both learning to accept yourself do personal artwork AND following your own voice to make unique artwork
  • Making art is the not the same as Viewing art as both have different perspective
  • Artist can stop all the time once their current art has reached the points of the diminishing returns and thus can find another art path - you can only quit once.
  • It's fine to let your vision races ahead of execution - that could be new upcoming goals to work on
  • Art is basically starting a sentence without knowing the ending. Art is basically chance. Embrace the uncertainity it brings.
  • The best way to find your next area of improvement is from your last work. ASK YOUR WORK WHAT IT NEEDS, NOT WHAT YOU NEED.
  • There's a different between acceptance and approval from the audience. Ensure that the audience doesn't shape your art development too much.

After reading this book, it kinda reminds me of this scene from one of my favourite movies - Little Miss Sunshine.

Goals for upcoming sprint

  • Progress on 2 art comms
  • Start studying on a particular artist
  • Practice more on cartoon drapery

Oh right, that's all from me this week. Hope, it's more fun and visual than just text lol.

That was all a lot of fun to read through! The gif memes really make it all more entretaining.

And I haven't watched that movie, but that quote certainly hits hard!

It reminds me of another quote, one from my favorites

There are other similar ones, about how success is always built on failure.

This can be hard to grasp, especially for a younger person like the little girl. You fear failing. but once life has pounded you a few times, you kinda lose that fear and move to learn from it instead. Best way to overcome fear is to face it.

And hey, all that cheerleader work looks great!!

LMAOOO

Noice!! Is it on your youtube channel or is it private?

Haha XD but don't you work tho? like didnt u get a AWS cert for work?

ur animals are SO cute! I rly like how they are shaped... its almost like a chibi but not quite XD idk how to describe it

The gifs are hella fun too haha

Thx for your kind word. Tbh, if I found it hard to even read my damn sprint blog, then it's clear there's a problem.

Answering your question

  • I livestream on my private DIscord server. I don't upload it as we say weird stuff sometime LMAO.
  • I work full-time as a software developer - thus why AWS cert is linked to that. The money I made from tech work is more for other usages aside from my selfish personal purchase; such as home loan and grocery. While the art money is 100% my decision. XD

ahh i see haha

Interesting updates with the gifs and video.
I like the doodles.
Another quote I heard of. The difference between a master and a student is that the master has failed more times than the student. It was from the anime Assassination classroom.

Sprint Retrospective #2 of 2024 - (15/1/24 - 28/1/24)

Welcome back! Look like the new way of writing blog got some people intrigued so I will be continue to proceed that way.

Anyway, let go!

Past Sprint's Goal & Other Work

TD (Total Drama) Commission

As i mentioned in previous blog, I currently have 2 art commissions. Doing 2 at the same time is a lot for me as I prefer doing 1 at a time. Hence, I have made a lot of progress on 1 art comm (2 chars in a GIF) and no progress on the other one (2 chars with background).

Ngl, I'm kinda suprised at how quick I'm progressing with the current comm as I'm nearly at the end/final picture of GIF before calling it done. I was mostly expecting to just get the draft done by the end of this sprint, not the whole thing damn it!

I post my draft work and current commission progress here but just want to post possible reasons why I was able to get most of it done despite my low expectation

  1. Single Focus - Due to time limitation, I have only really worked on this art commission. Maybe I acknowledged how much work there is and decided to just sorely focus on it.
  2. Livestream with commissioner - 50% of the time, I livestreamed this on my Discord server with the commissioner as he gets to watch me do the work and ask question to me. Now, this is called peer pressure and I noted that I have work harder when somebody else is watching my every movement.
  3. Fck on perfectionist mentality - There wasn't a time where I have to redo EVERYTHING because it doesn't look right. Only changes I have made is the facial expression because the character doesn't look appealing enough - but it didn't involve me going back to the drawing board - just some modification and viola!
  4. Some interest in this comm - Now, commission is meant to be all-business interest-optional type of work. Now, I accept comm ONLY if I'm slightly interested in it. Wouldn't say it's my type of content but it's a bit hilarious.
  5. Reward - With the commission money, I'm buying an NBA jersey on sale. Perhaps that motivate me to finish and finalise this so I can wear it with no guilt?

Just one more final image left and I'm done with this comm!

Artist Study

Frustratingly, made no progress at here at all! Rather than blabbering on about it, made some changes to it

  1. Switch to a new artist inspiration - if the current one is not inspiring me to do something NOW, then it's not for me at the moment
  2. Replace some art study with the new artist study - Those artist study have short-term benefit.

Hope that will force to do some cartoon study.

Drapery

Same as artist study, made no progress into it. Focused too much on that art comm I was working on. Perhaps, it's best to make some summary notes to force me to study on cartoon drapery as I have multiple different notes from different artist/youtubers.

TD Doodles

Was watching NFL Playoff - Go 49ers!

Goals for upcoming sprint

  • Finish current comm and start new art comm
  • Start studying on a particular artist NOW
  • Practice more on cartoon drapery

Oh right, that's all from me this week. Thx for reading and hope you have a productive month!

Haha well you're doing the right thing by prioritizing commission work  I'm sure the client thinks so as well.

The animation looks great xD, not sure what's going on, I guess it could go in a very good way or a very bad way, but either way the work itself is fun to watch!

Good luck with the next sprint! Glad to see things seem to be working out!

Nice work on the commissions. Were you commissioned to make the Total Drama characters into football players?

13 days later

Sprint Retrospective #3 of 2024 - (29/1/24 - 11/2/24)

One month down... damn that's too quick! Oh well, let go thru this retrospective.

Past Sprint's Goal & Other Work

TD (Total Drama) Commission

Completed the boxing commission right on time!

Next up is 2 TD comic comms - so one of the goal of this sprint is to complete the draft and get approved by commissioner.

Artist Study

Started studying on this artist "Carazar" - https://www.instagram.com/carazarzone/?hl=en

Key notes taken
1. Strong and expressive gesture
2. Simplified Basic shape
3. Focus on simplicity and expressivity over complex detail

Gonna keep studying and trying to incorporate some of his style into mine.

I'm basing my approach on an SPRINT idea - to get the best idea, remix and improve.

Drapery

May did some random doodle there and here but not an actual study/practice session on drapery. Maybe, it's better to just doodle for the time being.

Others

Completed my Total Drama facial reference - using Courtney character.

Will most likely use it as reference for generated TD facial work in commission. Should be easier to practice facial gesture.

Goals for upcoming sprint

  • Complete draft of comic comm
  • Continue studying on Carazar
  • Practice more on cartoon drapery

That's all from me. Have a great and productive day!

Good work on that comision and studies!

Aye, it's impressive a whole month has already gone by. Heck even know I feel like it was just the start of Feb and it's already the 12th.
